Online Retail Officially Profitable?
Online Retail Officially Profitable?
05/24/2004 08:25 PMRemember during the dot com boom where you couldn't find a single
online retailer that came anywhere close to profitability? Part of
this was due to the VC investment craze, where they were pouring money
into dot coms as fast as they could, and telling them that
profitability was secondary to growing the top line of their business
as fast as possible. Of course, it's always easy to grow revenue when
you're giving away dollar bills for seventy-five cents, which was
basically the business model of many dot coms. Then, the bubble
popped and many dot coms suddenly had to figure out a way to become
profitable. Many went out of business, but slowly, survivors started
to show quarterly reports with a lot less red ink. Now, a new study
has found that
the
aggregate financial results from various online retailers shows that
the overall industry is now profitable - not just a few of the
bigger players. One of the main reasons for this unexpected
profitability? The increasing use of paid search advertising.
E-commerce sites have slashed their marketing budgets and have ditched
costly (and useless) banner ads in favor of much more targeted text
ads on search sites like Google.

More Musicians Realize Free Can Be
Profitable
05/21/2004 04:14 AMHere's yet another article in a mainstream news source (USA Today)
noting that many musicians realize that
file sharing has helped them build a fan base who
come out to concerts and who feel much more involved with the band.
The article includes some quotes from RIAA chief Mitch Bainwol stating
the standard line about how the artists can do what they want, but
where will that leave the folks at the record labels? Of course, he's
basically taking the position that the recording industry is owed
their rightful profit, rather than realizing that business models and
markets change - and if his constituents can't keep up and come up
with new business models, they don't deserve to be in business. The
market for horse and buggies dried up when automobiles came about -
and no one today would say that we need to artificially prop up the
horse and buggy market, like he wants to make sure the recording
industry is artificially propped up. If he was really there to help
the industry, he'd be telling them that it was time to adjust already
and not try to hold back what's inevitable in the industry. Instead,
he tries to claim that the record labels are like VCs - a comparison
that has been made many times over the years - but which is wrong. At
least VCs have (mostly) learned to adjust to market changes over time.
The recording industry execs seem to think that markets never change
at all.

Wall Street Journal: Online more

04/15/2005 12:49 PMThe New York Post is reporting that the Wall Street Journal earned
more money with its online Web site than its print publication.
Predictably, though, the Post spins it all wrong: instead of talking
about the success of the online arm, it talks about the failure of the
print side and about how WSJ publisher Peter Kann, could be
“sweating over his job again”….

PalmOne, Confident From Profitable
Quarter, Launches Treo 666
07/01/2004 10:48 AM
PalmOne doubled Wall Street
estimates this week, reporting their first profit as a standalone
company due to strong sales of the Treo 600, causing a 22 percent hike
in stock price in after hours trading. Sales of the Treo 600 (and the
upcoming 610 version) are expected to keep profits high, while PalmOne
also tries to expand to fill the space left by Sony's exit from the
PDA market outside of Japan. PalmOne shipped 151,000 Treo 600s during
the fourth fiscal quarter, out of 1.1 million devices, total. If the
610 causes a healthy price reduction for the 600 -- and they can keep
up with demand -- both models will fly off the shelves. (Thanks,
Chaz, for the Photochop.)
