Screenshot Metro is a tool designed to evaluate the difference between two triangular meshes by computing the Hausdorff distance between the two surfaces. Metro adopts an approximated approach based on surface sampling and point-to-surface distance computation. The tool has been widely used in the surface simplification research community (more than 140 citations according to google scholar). The tool is built using the VCG library.
Changes:
This release adds options for saving two ASCII CSV files with the dump of the histogram of the error distribution between the two meshes (useful for printing high-quality graphs).

Grand Rapids Proposes Trials by Fire for
Metro-Fi
04/02/2005 10:49 AM

The city has asked its potential metropolitan wireless network vendors to build temporary test networks: This is an awfully clever idea from several standpoints. First, it allows the city to see how the vendor works with its utility employees to set up the test. Second, it shows that the equipment works. Third, it gives local residents a chance to test service to see if it's something they would ultimately be interested in. Fourth, it allows different technology to contend in similar spaces, which lets the city more easily choose the best kind of wireless technology for their region. Fifth, it's not as cut and dried as an RFP with a single winner.

Of course, this test favors companies that have the wherewithal to build out test networks of this scale, but the city has 13 potential vendors for these trials!

Trials will begin May 6 and last eight weeks with open access during the tests. The ultimate network will span 45 square miles. Funding plans aren't mentioned.

ArKaos on Thursday released ArKaos VJ 3.0.3, an upgrade to its video jockey software that adds support for DMX, a protocol that enables the software to be used as a remote media server which controls a lighting console. The Mac version of ArKaos can only connect to a lighting console through the ArtNet Ethernet protocol -- the DMX-USB interface works only with Windows machines.

DMX support
01/06/2005 11:58 PM
ArKaos VJ DMX is ArKaos VJ with added support for DMX protocol through a special ArKaos VJ DMX license. What does that mean? I won't pretend to know. According to the website "DMX is an addressing & communication protocol that allows a centralized controller (such as a lighting console) to address from 1 to 512 dimmers individually. Those dimmers can be used to control lighting equipment, lasers, fog machines, other material,.. And now also ArKaos VJ." If you check out the videos on the site you'll soon see that with this software and the proper hardware, you can put on a pretty cool live show.

ArKaos VJ software gains new effects

ArKaos VJ software gains new effects 07/23/2004 11:27 AM
ArKaos on Friday released the latest version of its eponymous video jockey (VJ) software for Mac and Windows -- ArKaos VJ v3.0.2. The new release adds a new video control feature that helps users make frame-accurate selections of content they want to play inside a video loop. New effects have been added as well, including Mirror, ArKolor and Tracker. And improved beat detection helps you adjust the speed of video loops to the tempo of the music. Some effects have been enhanced, and you can now latch layers through the computer keyboard or a MIDI footswitch. ArKaos VJ is compatible with Mac OS X v10.3, Mac OS 9 and various Windows versions. It costs US$335, but this upgrade is free for registered 3.x users.

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

Take Center Stage Among Desktops
12/29/2004 11:54 AM
This month's Top 15 Desktop PCs chart highlights two trends: the emergence of powerful new gaming systems that have sophisticated style, and the rapidly growing selection of Media Center PCs, which expand PC-based home entertainment beyond gaming. Examples of the former are two new Athlon-fueled machines that sit atop the power section of our chart: Alienware's Aurora 64 FX-55 and ABS's Ultimate M5-64. Both of these systems are visually appealing without shouting "I'm just for games." Not only are they the two fastest systems on the chart, but they also produced outstanding sound with their high-end Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 cards and their 5.1-channel Logitech speakers (the X-530 and the Z-680, respectively).

Today, though, the group was quiet, much quieter than usual, because one of their members, PHP, was not its usual cheerful self. In fact, one could say that PHP was in a true funk, if one had a mind to say something like that aloud, or within the hearing of one's boss. Or doctor.

Why the blues, PHP, the other languages asked. All the languages that is but C, because all C ever said was "bite me", being a rude language and hard to live with, but still respected because it was such a good worker.

And PHP answered...

Dynamic Languages

Dynamic Languages 08/12/2004 11:41 AM

Dynamic Tools for Dynamic Languages: After reading the " Programmers are Idiots" essay that Joe posted last week, I got to thinking about my situation. Am I actually a programmer? I came to the conclusion that no, I'm not — I'm a scripter. I work predominantly on the Web, and while I can "program" in Visual Basic, I work best in scripting languages like PHP.

I guess I like to think that I solve problems, regardless of method. I may not fire up a C++ IDE and compile stuff right and left, but my company comes to me with IT problems every day (every hour, sometimes), and I manage to solve 90% of them. I use all sorts of languages and technologies, but at the end of the day, problems are solved and business continues to improve.

(I will admit, however, to a concerted attempt lately to program some things in VB.Net. Why? Because while I may not consider myself a "programmer," I do enjoy getting paid like one. And, sadly, you don't see many job postings for "problem solver.")

Related to all this is the essay linked above. It's a Very Important Thing. It's very long, but it has good headings, so you can skim it.

The author attempts to redefine traditional "scripting" languages like Perl, Python, and PHP as "dynamic languages." It's essentially a call for respect — these languages may be as glamourous as Visual Basic, Java, and C++, but they solve as many problems. Oftentimes more.

Just as Linux was suddenly recognized as a significant platform choice after years of being "snuck in through the back door", high-level open source programming languages are becoming recognized by mainstream analysts as key pieces of an effective approach to building software.

[...] The strengths of these languages derive from their open source nature, from their pragmatic approach, and from their constant evolution in response to real user needs. Ignoring them is equivalent to ignoring the hammer in your tool chest because you've just been sold a fancy screwdriver.

So, am I a programmer? Or am I a scripter? Or am I just a guy who solves problems through a broad base of experience with what a lot platforms, languages, and applications can do?

If it were up to me, I'd much rather hire someone who knew a little about a lot, and who could analyze a problem from that perspective before coming up with a solution that was centered around making the problem go away rather than using one language over the other. Of course, sometimes you need a specific type of programmer, but just as often, you don't — you really just need a problem solver.

But maybe I'm just making excuses because I don't have CS degree and I hate compiling stuff. Perhaps I'm just bitter.
