04/11/2005 08:51 AMThere's nothing like the human brain. No nonbiological entity can
process massive amounts of different types of data, integrate the

major database vendors tell it, they're coming close.
Embedded Databases
Embedded Databases
09/16/2004 07:28 PMEvery serious program needs data, but not every serious program needs
a full-blown relational database server backend. You're not stuck to
reading, parsing, and writing flat-files forever, though. Phillip

Comparing Databases
Comparing Databases
11/13/2002 04:56 AMGenerally speaking, there are four different types of databases
available on Linux: key/value, relational, object-oriented, and XML.
Each has strengths and weaknesses. When choosing a database you should
consider whether it:
- Can handle simultaneous access from multiple users
- Can be easily accessed from programs written in different
languages (especially object-oriented languages)
- Can handle large amounts of data
- Can ensure that multiple operations either all happen at once, or
not at all ("transactions")
- Can perform complicated searches ("queries")

Databases get a grip on XML
Databases get a grip on XML
01/08/2004 07:09 PM
The next iteration of the SQL standard was supposed to arrive in 2003.
But SQL standardization has always been a glacially slow process, so
nobody should be surprised that SQL:2003 -- now known as SQL:200n --
isn't ready yet. Even so, 2003 was a year in which XML-oriented data
management, one of the areas addressed by the forthcoming standard,
showed up on more and more developers' radar screens. [Full story at

olumns/roundup29.htmAll 50 states make some level of
corporate and business filings available online. In a few instances
only limited information (such as name availability) is retrievable.
The majority of the states, however, use their Web presence to
disseminate a range of public business records -- and most of them
offer access at no charge. This update adds information for one state
and one commercial service, corrects an indexing error and reflects
changes that have been made in the previously listed databases. The
scope of this roundup does not yet include tax filings. Taxing
authorities are mentioned for two states (Maryland and New Jersey)
because they offer the only online route to business organization and
trade name information in those jurisdictions. Unless otherwise
stated, each database listed below is free. This has been added to

Oracle 9i is a native XML database
Oracle 9i is a native XML database
06/27/2002 02:08 AMAt this point I have to say there's little reason for products like
Software AG Tamino to exist anymore. Even if there is some speed
advantage to Tamino and brethren, it's simply lacking in almost every
other regard. This is especially damning given that Tamino and
brethren will cost more for most simple implementations. There's
plenty of room for native XML databases to play in smaller apps and
for apps requiring DTDs, but when it comes to large corporate
repositories of data, there's really no reason now to go away from the
existing relational databases. I expect IBM and Microsoft to be coming
out with products of similar power in the near future. -- Kimbro
