04/29/2004 01:32 PMThe ABC-TV program 20/20 will air a contest between five couples on
the show this Friday -- the winners get to adopt a real-live, pooping,
crying baby. So, let me get this straight. You can't say "fuck," but
you
can broadcast a raffle for a human being?
What's that? You say the program and host Barbara Walters have gone
too far this time? What do you know about television? ABC knows a
winner when it sees it and this is Nielsen gold, my friend. A reality
show with a human life on the line -- all disguised as news
programming. Let the other shows have half-naked people betraying each
other on a deserted island. Give them the half-naked people eating
buckets of bug eyes. And the half-naked people putting up with Donald
Trump. And the half-naked people trying to get other half-naked people
to marry them.

UPDATE: STOP PRESS! The real scandal here? Celebrity
spoon-bending psychic Uri Geller is outraged at news of the 20/20 baby
giveaway episode. He's planning legal action, and claims he owns a
worldwide patent on any reality TV show that involves winning a baby.
"I will speak to my patent attorney," says Geller, "I own the idea."
Whatever, dear BoingBoing readers, but let me set the record straight:
I own the patent on any reality-TV show involving live
mudwrestling smackdowns between Uri Geller and Barbara Walters, and I
will personally bend the spoon of anyone who forgets it. Link to Reuters story.

Boing Boing audio interview with Mind
Hacks editor Matt Webb
12/22/2004 01:30 AM
Mark Frauenfelder:

I'm starting to get interested in
podcasting, so I interviewed Matt Webb, the co-editor of the new book,
Mind Hacks, just published by O'Reilly. It's 25 minutes long, and I
even created a cheesy Garageband theme song for what I hope is the
first of many interviews.
Note: Matt wrote me with the following info -- "This is the McGu
rk video I was talking about. Just proving that I'm nothing
without my notes, I incorrectly remembered the
McGurk sounds! It's a visual 'ga' and an aural 'ba' that combine to
the
perception of 'da.' No 'va' at all (that's a variation on the
experiment)."
The Mind Hack's weblog is here.

More on blocked sites for .mil websurfers
Following up on
this BoingBoing post about rumors that access to TheMemoryHole is
being blocked on military computers in Iraq...
[John continues:]If the request was denied due to the Content
Filter configuration is a sentence fragment, but with The
content category reported is Gen. News. and If you feel this
site was blocked in error, please contact the Help Desk the
meaning is clear enough. For whatever reason, "General News" is not
fit for our troops. I've been meaning to send her a list of links and
ask her if she'd be willing to try to access them (Newsweek? New York
Times? Common Dreams? Freerepublic.com [a conservative site]?
townhall.com [another conservative site]?) I'm also curious what other
kinds of sites she can't visit (geek news? music news? yahoo?
wikipedia?) and whether she's prohibited from visiting these sites at
work because she's /at work/, or if she's encouraged not to pursue the
news in general.
Zaku, can you or anyone in the military
in Iraq corroborate this or look into this?

"Why do you need your baseball glove at 10:30 on a Saturday night?"
Normally, the answer to this question would involve me making mildly
to extremely inappropriate suggestions involving a trip to trashy
lingerie and some Jack Daniels . . . but I was faced with a serious
problem. I had a fever, and the only prescription was my baseball
glove!

Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to
sell baby-privacy
04/04/2005 06:24 AMCory Doctorow:
A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the
idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The
idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed
more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the
freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and
I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled
through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with
input from maternity wards.
That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It
doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it
doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and
respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no
medical endorsement of these products).
Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a
"free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical
forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the
picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.
On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to
the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free
portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines,
having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two
others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate
and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph
of both...
...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family.
They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her
name and birthdate and your full name and address...
Growing Family will use your information from time to time to
promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from
Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.
Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few
weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a
steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday
cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a
baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. Needless
to say, when their next baby was born, they never, ever bought
products from the companies that ghoulishly continued to market to
their dead daughter.

Just Upgrade, For Crying Out Loud
05/28/2004 03:36 PMFrom the 'Let it Die' Department: A couple of Apple hackers have modded up their
Apple ]['s so that they can run web browsers (yes, you read that
right).
Oliver Schmidt and Glenn Jones have made a working
prototype Apple ][ port of Contiki that works with Glenn's self-built
Apple ][ Ethernet card. Thanks to Tim Haynes, a video capture of the
port is available for download (9 megabytes, DivX encoded). The video
shows an Ethernet-equipped Apple ][e loading and running Contiki, the
network configuration process, and the web browser surfing to
www.apple2.org! Oliver did the porting of Contiki to the Apple ][ and
Glenn made device drivers for his Ethernet hardware.
Apple should ship those guys an iMac, just out of admiration.
Tune in next week when we play Unreal Tournament on an Atari 2600.

right before your child's own eyes, giving them their first experience
with the empty promises that their doomed life holds. No glasses are
necessary and the black box contains an optical system and patented

could easily be adapted for use in museums and anywhere else that
floating, animated images are welcome. The company's site isn't coming

Ever since I interviewed artist
Jim Woodring back in 1995 for
the bOING bOING
Happy Mutant Handbook, I've been enamored
with his surreal comix inspired by his childhood hallucinations and
"psychological malfunctions." Now, Taruto Fuyama has animated
Woodring's Frank character in a beautiful piece that somehow manages
to perfectly express the dreamy tone and emotion of the comic.
(Someone else's attempt
here.) Fuyama won a Prize of Excellence for the work in the Japan
Media Arts Festival. The animation is online in Real format. From the
"Reason for the Award":
"...the greatest appeal of this work is that it had
successfully expressed unique "newness" by combining 3D-CG and
classical cartoon-like design. Alien creatures created by pasting
comic frames to 3D-CG in a Gothic manner generate uncomfortable
feelings, and these uncomfortable feelings that color the entire work
feature this work's contemporary sensitivity."

Animated LED Watch
Animated LED Watch

Evincing the fondest
memories of KIT from Knight Rider, the TS100 from Cyber Punk is an LED
watch featuring a mirrored face and several different scrolling
effects on its LED grid. The grid consists of 90 LEDs, and when you
press the button they do their little dance and "fade away", leaving
illuminated what remaining lights are required to tell you the time
(or date). Completely stainless steel, they're available for import
now from TokyoFlash for roughly $140 including shipping, "because you
are a rebel!" An animated graphic on the catalog page gives you a good
idea of how it works.

Animated Figures Available In Canada
Animated Figures Available In Canada
05/07/2004 03:24 AMEven though they are a Target exclusive below the border, the Animated
Clone Wars figures seem to be fair game here in Canada. Sadly,
the traditional distribution problems here are again preventing Hasbro
Canada from getting these little gems into our grubby little hands.
The toy company isn’t to blame this time (or so it would seem) since
they are currently being solicited on their retailer’s only web site.
Thankfully, a North Vancouver toyshop,
Big Pete’s, has noticed
this oversight and has ordered a large quantity of the line. That
being said, Canadians looking to avoid a large secondary market sting
and potential Customs charges need only drop
Pete a line.

I don't quite get the
overall design aesthetic behind this US Basic Lip Talkers speaker
phone. The blue plastic says, "I'm fun, but crappy!" while the motile
chrome lips just scream, literally if you like, "I'm a classy,
futuristic muppet!" Either way, it's a little too much fun and too
much class for the likes of me; I'll stick to my overclocked Teddy
Ruxpin.

This is pretty stunning: it's a stop-motion-animated short version of

orgeous animation of pb's tree. i wish i had the patience to do
this sort of thing, but i get tired of leaning on the window sill
after a month or two [anil
dash's daily links]

The snow has given me another
season to add to this compressed-time picture of a tree on the side of
my house:
tree
animation (286 kB).
Paul Bausch is the third
founder of Pyra - the folks who created Blogger. Evan Williams
is now at Google, while Meg Hourihan is creating something called the
Lafayette

Meanwhile Paul seems to be watching trees
grow.
This is what we call "quite impressive"
