Google Founders on Fresh Air

Google Founders on Fresh Air 10/30/2003 11:30 AM
Fresh Air's Terry Gross interviews Larry and Sergey. Some highlights: Terry asks if there are countries that block Google results. Their first answer: the United States. "The United States has the Digital Millenium Copyright Act [...] there are probably a handful of sights -- maybe a hundred web pages are blocked for that reason. [...] In France and Germany there are some rules against Nazi sites [...] a handful of sites are blocked. [...] The country can block certain sites in some countries [...] the most famous case for us was [...] China." Terry noted that when she searched for "Google" and clicked I'm Feeling Look and nothing happened! "In Computer Science we call that recursion. [...] Sergey's giving me a dirty look." And then Sergey suggested it was "idempotence". Terry asks if they feel like Revenge of the Nerds-type geeks. "I hope we can serve as positive examples. [...] I'm always amazed that there aren't more people who work on technology and science [...] I think that's the easiest way to change the world."...

Google Site Search Change

Google Site Search Change 01/25/2004 09:24 AM

Google has a made a subtle but big change with site searches. You can now do a "site" search with no keywords and Google will return all pages in its index for that site. Here's one for this site, though I'm curious how Google thinks it has 7,170 pages.

You used to have to enter a keyword, so Google would search the site for that word. This is a handy way to check that a site is in the Google index.
