Properites vs. Methods...

Properites vs. Methods... 11/13/2003 07:36 PM
It is an age old debate… we have some fairly good guidelines, but they certainly leave room for improvement. Today at a WinFX API review (for some cool stuff that didn’t make it out in the PDC drop) we had the debate again… Today the APIs look like:

public DateTime GetDisconnectTime();
public TimeSpan GetIdleTime();
public DateTime GetLogonTime();
public SessionStates GetSessionStates();
public WindowsIdentity GetUserInformation();

My knee jerk is to make these properties…

public DateTime DisconnectTime {get; }
public TimeSpan IdleTime {get; }
public DateTime LogonTime {get; }
public SessionStates SessionStates {get; }
public WindowsIdentity UserInformation {get; }

the problem… well, the calls *could* be cross machine…. My worry is if they are cross machine making these guys properties will lead people to write inefficient code (and therefore bring down the wrath of Rico)…

So, my question for you… Based on this very limited data I have given you, what should we do here? Go for properties and hope for the best, or error on the safe side and use methods, something else?

Best Methods For Broadcasting Live Audio
On The Web
12/15/2003 02:26 AM
We don't normally do "Ask Techdirt" type posts, but this is a good question, and Jeremiah Jacobs has been doing very interesting things with online music, which we like to encourage (and has been an active, thoughtful commenter on Techdirt). So, if anyone has some good thoughts, feel free to note them in the comments. Jeremiah writes "Dear Techdirt: What's the best means for "broadcasting" audio via the web? I'm aware of things like Shoutcast, and it's ilk, but I'm in need of something I can use to create a 128k or higher mp3 stream in realtime. The overall concept is that I want to put on sessions where surfers can listen in @ near-CD quality while I compose/mix/screw-off in my studio, with a live audio feed right from my mixing station. The idea being to give people some insight (directly) into the creative process, as they can listen in on actual creative/production sessions. Later on, I want to couple this with a webcam feed, too. I am capable of implementing suggestions in both M$ and Linux environments. Thanks for your suggestions."

NY Times details torture methods

NY Times details torture methods 01/01/2005 04:53 PM
Is this really the best idea the military can think of? Today's NY Times provides details on some methods used to extract the truth from Iraqi prisoners, including (I'm not making this up) audio tapes played loudly with "songs by Lil' Kim and Rage Against the Machine and rap performances by Eminem played loudly," and "a mix of babies crying and the television commercial for Meow Mix in which the jingle consists of repetition of the word 'meow'." Wouldn't sodium pentathol or some other chemical persuasion be more effective, while providing less fodder for Leno and Letterman?

Washington Post on Bush's torture
methods
06/11/2004 12:47 PM
This Washington Post editorial about the methods of torture that the Bush administration approves of is all over the blogosphere, but I think it's important enough to post here.
Before the Bush administration took office, the Army's interrogation procedures -- which were unclassified -- established this simple and sensible test: No technique should be used that, if used by an enemy on an American, would be regarded as a violation of U.S. or international law. Now, imagine that a hostile government were to force an American to take drugs or endure severe mental stress that fell just short of producing irreversible damage; or pain a little milder than that of "organ failure, impairment of bodily function, or even death." What if the foreign interrogator of an American "knows that severe pain will result from his actions" but proceeds because causing such pain is not his main objective? What if a foreign leader were to decide that the torture of an American was needed to protect his country's security? Would Americans regard that as legal, or morally acceptable? According to the Bush administration, they should.

Martin Fowler: Can average developers

Martin Fowler: Can average developers
use agile methods?
05/02/2004 03:30 PM
I've often heard the claim that agile methods can only be used by the better developers and that average or below average developers should avoid agile methods. When I get asked this, I have to answer that I don't know the answer - and that this ignorance is natural with any new technique.

Two points.

First Martin points out that the bazaar (open source methodologies) is an agile method. Secondly, although PHP in itself is not an agile metholodogy (err, its a language), it has a pragmatic flavour that makes it suitable for people of all levels.

Two opinions.

I believe the wide growth of open source and even more explosive popularity of PHP is proof that agile methods work with people without expensive computer science degrees. However if Martin is trying to say that you cannot create great projects with only mediocre contributors, than i agree. Good leadership is always important. Ask Linus.
