Distributively studying the net to
improve it: NETI@home
04/30/2004 12:50 AM

A group of Georgia Institute of Technology computer scientists are launching a collaborative, distributed computing project to better understand information flows in the internet. NETI@home works on users' machines, tracking and assessing internet connection and traffic patterns. The project team vows to protect users' privacy when they run the downloadable software.

NETI@home is designed to run on end-user machines and will collect various statistics about Internet performance. These statistics will then be sent to a server at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), where they will be collected and made publicly available. We believe that this tool will give researchers much needed data on the end-to-end performance of the Internet, as measured by end-users.

The project draws on the computational successes of distributed projects such as Stanford University 's Folding@home and SETI@home , which covered different research fields. It is copy left ed under the GPL license, an open source alternative to traditional copyright.

After studying Zen

After studying Zen 09/12/2004 06:02 PM

In honor of seeing Euan Semple tomorrow night - I'm going to respond to one of his recent posts - with my own John Cage quote. I actually met him on three occasions - while at Oberlin - and I actually heard him say this......

"before studying Zen - man is man and mountains are mountains - yet things are confused."

"while studying Zen - man is no longer man and mountains are no longer mountains."

"after studying Zen - man is man and mountains are moutains - yet things are no longer confused."

Here's Euan's post that inspired this outburst of nothingness......

And what is the purpose of writing music? One is, of course, not dealing with purposes but with sounds. Or the answer must take the form of a paradox: a purposeful purposelessness or a purposeless play. This play, however, is an affirmation of life—not an attempt to bring order out of chaos nor to suggest improvements in creation, but simply a way of waking up to the very life we're living, which is so excellent once one gets one's mind and one's desires out of its way and lets it act of its own accord.

Studying French in Paris

Studying French in Paris 06/05/2005 11:56 PM

As many of you know, while I was in Paris last month I took French classes. I searched online for a schools and was overwhelmed by the Google results. Then the first day I was in Paris, I was reading an ex-pat's blog (he too was in Paris) and he mentioned studying at the Alliance Française. The next day, I headed over there, took a placement test, paid my fee, and got my student id. Sure, I could have done more research, but somehow, this just felt right, so I went with it.

I signed up for two hours a day, four days a week. The off day (which is the same for all courses), the Alliance offers cultural outings for students. From the very first day, I loved my class. Our teacher (Madame was what I called her, as her last name was complicated to pronounce and using her first name seemed too casual) was wonderful. Fluent in French, English, and Spanish, she also seemed to speak Chinese and Russian when the moment arose. She spent time talking about French culture and history in addition to grammar and vocabulary.

The class size was about twenty people, but it didn't present too much of a problem, and Madame made sure we all had opportunities to speak aloud (during which time she'd correct our pronunciation) both within small groups and to the whole class.

I really enjoyed it, and my classmates, and was very sad on the last day, especially since the rest of my group was continuing together with our teacher in Paris, and I was returning to the States. I learned a lot and felt that my French really improved a great deal, to the point that I could understand a lot of what was said to me, and could (in most situations at least) make myself understood.

Based on my limited experience, I'd definitely recommend taking classes at the Paris Alliance Française. I certainly plan to return to Paris, and when I do, I'll sign up for more classes there again.

Studying journalism - stalking Thomas
Crampton
01/23/2004 02:18 PM
tomsergey
Introduced Thomas to Sergey. Joi helping his fellow "journalist"...
Thomas Crampton is a fellow GLT and journalist for the International Herald Tribune. I've been hanging out with his a lot this trip, trying to learn more about how journalists work and think. For instance, I asked him about how he deals with issues such as global warming where it is so difficult to understand the first sources and we have to rely so heavily on experts and reports which often conflict. I've also been watching how he interviews people and teases out quotes and threads and focuses his discussion in a way that tries to gather evidence for a story that's developing in his head while at the same time keeping open opportunities for new ideas. (Just like good bloggers do. ;-) )

He's now working on a story about bloggers and he's been interviewing the bloggers at Davos. He's been asking a lot of questions about how we view ourselves, our ethics and what blogging means. It's very interesting on many levels because I'm interviewing him about journalism, he's interviewing me about blogging and I'm watching him interact with people, efficiently gathering information to construct a story. I'm looking forward to seeing how Tom's article turns out and how he manages to take the spaghetti of conversations and turns it into a piece of journalism.

In the process of developing the story about blogs, he quickly picked up the importance of Google and asked me to introduce him to Sergey. We both asked him questions about Google and blogs and I am happy to report that Sergey thinks that blogs may highlight some general issues with page ranking that need to be dealt with to continue to increase the accuracy of page rank, but that he didn't seem to think that blogs were "noise" or that they were getting artificially high page rank. Sergey didn't seem think think that blogs should be treated any differently than any other type of web page. This concurs with the opinion that Larry Page gave me the when I asked him about this last year.

So sorry Andrew, it doesn't look like blogs will be filtered from Google any time soon, and until the media starts to become more permalink friendly, I think the role of blogs in providing information and opinion on the Internet will continue to increase. The good news is that I realize that the questions that many bloggers are asking themselves about ethics and justice are the same questions that editors and journalists are asking themselves.

I wonder if it is ethical for me blogging about Tom's article? ;-)

An article in the Memphis Business Journal describes research being done at the FedEx Institute of Technology to develop robot cargo planes that don't need pilots. The article doesn't give any specifics about the program but says it's "on the horizon". It may refer to the experiments some years ago in which Raytheon and FedEx autolanded a 727-200 cargo plane using LAAS and JPALS. At the time it was rumored they were going to work on a remotely piloted 727 next. The article says FedEx is also working on "performance enhancement" technology for their human workers that will "increase the human capacity to accomplish more work".

Mike Linksvayer

Mike Linksvayer 04/05/2005 02:09 AM

(Next in a continuing series of blurbs about Commoners I'm thankful to have worked with.)

If there is one person whose heroics are most unsung at Creative Commons, it could very well be Mike Linksvayer. Mike has been the CTO for about two years. He came on at a crucial time, when CC was growing jerkily from a loose network of contractors to a real organization, and he brought stability from the get-go. Stability isn't sexy, and it's not very visible from the outside. If CC is like a band, then Mike's the drummer. People not in bands rarely ever get how much a tasteful, subdued drummer matters. But people in bands know that they're impossibly valuable. And CC, when you boil it down, is all about the drums.

Mike is the force behind, among other things: the vibrant cc-metadata mailing list (our most active), our membership at the W3C, our amazing multi-language license interface and Commons Deeds (have you taken a good look at our stuff in Suomesk i?, Dutch? -- amazing!), the discovery and harnessing of the mighty talent called Nathan Yergler (profiled here earlier), the move to leverage CC Search off Nutch's open code base, countless tech developments and deals, a huge chunk of our blog posts, and who-knows-how-many other technological things that I don't know about (because I simply don't understand them). Something else you may not know: He also knows the the nitty-gritty of our licenses as well as anyone.

Mike's got a fine, bleak sense of humor, which I for one appreciate. This year he sported the best, most efficient Halloween costume -- shorts, and a tshirt declaring a single phrase -- that I've seen in a while. Maybe the same fearlessness that fuels his humor also drives his ability to call anyone on their b.s. -- a skill and a will that are rare and crucial in this "space."

Another thing I love about Mike is his taste. I'm a firm believer in the notion that the more stuff you hate, the better taste you have. Mike, I can testify, hates a lot of stuff. Which means he loves the stuff only really worth loving. So I've learned a lot from him -- about what arguments are too cheesy, what sentiments too sentimental, and not least, what Bay Area radio is actually worth listening to.

Here's a toast to Mike Linksvayer, in the hope I get to work with him again very soon. All of you who still get to are luckier even than you might think.

BitTorrent v4.0.1

BitTorrent v4.0.1 03/25/2005 09:08 PM
BitTorrent is a protocol designed for transferring files. It is peer-to-peer in nature, as users connect to each other directly to send and receive portions of the file. However, there is a central server (called a tracker) which coordinates the action of all such peers. The tracker only manages connections, it does not have any knowledge of the contents of the files being distributed, and therefore a large number of users can be supported with relatively limited tracker bandwidth. BitTorrent Will Not Go Away

BitTorrent Will Not Go Away 03/17/2005 03:08 AM
There was an article I read in Yahoo News from the Washington Post on BitTorrents. It explains that too many legit uses exist for BitTorrent for the service to be shut down. The MPAA is admitting that there are good and bad uses for BitTorrent and that they will only go after people that are helping users to download illegal movies. It's good to see a mianstream media outlet like the Washington Post understand the real concept and design behind BitTorrents.

This represents a shift from previous practices, in which the MPAA, the Recording Industry Association of America (news - web sites) and other groups have tried to have entire products -- for example, the first Diamond Rio MP3 player or the networked ReplayTV (news - web sites) video recorder -- taken off the market. One reason for this change of heart may be that in BitTorrent, unlike many other file-sharing programs, legitimate use doesn't amount to a token minority. It's central to this program's existence. Developers of versions of the Linux (news - web sites) operating system were some of the first to jump on BitTorrent as a way to ship out vast amounts of data. A Linux distribution can easily span four CD-ROMs; instead, companies such as Red Hat offer BitTorrent downloads of their work.

  • Agreed to help direct any traffic from mikerowesoft.com to Rowe's new Web site (which he's currently working on) to make sure he doesn’t lose any business. • Agreed to pay for Mike to get Microsoft Certification training. Depending on which courses he chooses, this could lead him to become a certified support technician, or system administrator, or something along those lines.
  • Agreed to give Mike a subscription to MSDN, the Microsoft Developer Network Web site, with various tools for developing software around Microsoft products.
  • Agreed to give Mike an Xbox game system, complete with a number of games of his choosing.
