Imbroglio Polyglotte

Imbroglio Polyglotte

Imbroglio Polyglotte 04/30/2004 12:47 AM

This, from Libération, is about the practicalities of dealing with the languages of the European Union, now twenty in number. If you can read French it’s well worth a visit. Its charms include the finding that more languages available means, in fact, fewer used; characters named Patrick Twidle and Berit Tecäär; and the wonderful quote “On n'a pas parlé. Alors, en fin de repas, on a dansé...” I wouldn’t know how to say that in English, we have to limp along without on. Know any Slovenian-Portuguese translators?

The Shape of Pharrots to Come

The Shape of Pharrots to Come 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
John Coggeshall mentions that the PHP on Parrot project has been named "Pharrot" by the php-con conference attendees. Here's my take on things. Now I don't have any inside info, so the following is entirely guesswork, and any resemblence to reality is entirely your imagination: Although Sterling and Thies are very modest, given the fact that they were given the closing keynote and the amazing performance improvements - Pharrot will probably be PHP 6. The speed of the JIT means that PHP will become a general programming language. A high performance application server written 100% in PHP becomes practical. A high performance anything becomes practical in PHP. The tribes using Parrot will probably include Python, PHP and Perl. Code sharing between different programming tribes will become a reality. This does not mean that there will be full interoperatability between all languages, because (a) there is no common runtime library (yet), (b) and no consensus on what will be the default PMC's (Parrot's language extensions) installed. There will be battles fought over the run-time. In PHP4/5, after execution, we throw away the opcodes together with the bath water, or store them in shared memory. Parrot gives you more choices. See the end of Dan Sugalski's Parrot internals presentation (ppt). The Zend API is dead - big deal. Parrot is a big opportunity for companies with skill and resolve. The tools market for open source programming languages suddenly becomes much larger because you are able to support so many more languages effectively. My prediction: the first beta of Pharrot will be out in 2006. PS: Selkirk was prescient about parrot. Smart chap.

MCI For Sale

MCI For Sale 09/20/2004 01:24 PM
It looks like MCI's turnaround plan hasn't turned it around far enough. Reports are out this morning that the company is actively looking for a buyer. The company pretty much stopped doing very much at all for an extended period of time while they had to deal with all those pesky accounting scam problems. Now that they have their head above water, they're realizing that the tide has pushed them far, far away from where the rest of the telecom world is. While the article speculates that they may have trouble selling themselves, that might not be the case. The now-out-of-bankrupt company has a (hopefully) clean set of books, plenty of customers, and a network that many other companies already drool over. The one area that they probably should just jettison, though, is their consumer business -- or at least pull an AT&T move and focus only on VoIP. Of course, just like AT&T, MCI made the bizarre move to ditch their wireless play when having a foot in the wireless market was clearly in their long-term best interests.

Somehow I can tell that Matt had a deprived childhood. Or maybe one that was too rich. In either case, he doesnt understand the Zen of garage sales, that much is obvious. The Zen, my friend, is not in getting an ‘antique’ from the 1950’s or a third-hand copy of the original Atari release of Pac-Man, but in the hunt and the entire day spent in the outdoors with people you want to spend time…

Mobinote DVX-POD On Sale (Just Not Here)

Mobinote DVX-POD On Sale (Just Not Here) 08/16/2004 02:28 PM

DVX_handheld100x100.jpg imageThe Mobinote DVX-Pod 7010 is one sale from at least one Taiwanese retailer, it seems. For $19,000 Taiwanese New Dollars (about $585), you can take one of the stark white hard disk video players with a 7-inch screen firmly into your hands. Both hands, I'm saying, and with a tight grip. Because it's big, you see. Quite large. Very big.

Hefty.

But the thing is, even though I am a Champion of Small - see today's earlier comments about the Gmini 400, for instance - the DVX-Pod 7010 does a lot of things right, like having a high-resolution screen (720 by 480 pixels) and built-in PVR functions. It won't fit in your pocket, unless you're some sort of man mountain, but it's not pretending otherwise, either, and that goes a long way.

Will it ever stop (in the US)? Yo, I don't know. (Thanks, Ben!)

Have you ever wished you had started and owned Lindows instead of Michael Robertson? After all, the upstart Linux distribution first gained huge notoriety by pulling on the whiskers of the Microsoft monopoly, then by losing a few rounds in court as Gates and company went global court-shopping, but finally banking hundreds of millions of dollars to settle the suit Microsoft had filed against it here in the U.S. Well, whip out your credit card, because you can pick up L-I-N-D-O-W-S right now on eBay for a starting bid of just a couple hundred dollars. Comic Art #6 on sale

Comic Art #6 on sale 09/21/2004 08:56 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: comicartI picked up issue #6 of Comic Art magazine last week. What a treat. sethThere's a long article about Seth (creator of Palookaville) with plenty of pictures, including a cardboard city he built (seen on the cover) and a page from his sketchbook (which I scanned here -- incredible! Click on thumb for enlargement). Unfortunately, no pictures of Seth. I've only seen other people's drawings of Seth. (He's always wearing a vintage hat and suit and chain smoking when people draw him.)

6dThere's another article about Virgil Partch (aka "VIP"), a delightfully wacky cartoonist from the 40s and 50s. If you look closely at the hands on VIP's characters, you'll notice that they have more than five fingers. Sometimes they have as many as 12 fingers on a hand! He did this because he used to work at Disney, where he was forced to draw four-fingered characters. The extras fingers were his way of evening the score.

The price of Comic Art is $9, which is a good deal, because it's glossy color throughout. Link
