Feed poster 06/05/2005 11:32 PM

I combined a couple of examples from the book to create Feed Poster, a program that checks a list of newsfeeds, composes a blog post listing the items from those newsfeeds posted in the last X days. You could use it, for example, to post a summary of your del.icio.us links at the end of each day. I considered using David Czarnecki's Java API for del.icio.us, which looks awesome, but I ended up using a simple newsfeed parser and blog client instead.

Whose criminals are they?

Whose criminals are they? 11/17/2003 10:04 PM
Whose criminals are they? Canada and the U.S. are deporting immigrant criminals back to the Caribbean -- criminals who were born there but, in many cases, raised in North America. Whose problem are they? Virtually every Caribbean country feels the burden of the deportations, espe cially from the U.S., which, in 1998, deported 55,500 "aliens" on criminal grounds, 3,700 to the Caribbean. Defenders of the deportations say Canada and the U.S. are just getting rid of bad apples, many of whom shouldn't be here in the first place. But The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) says that, frequently, the deportees have little more than place of birth to connect them to the region. In most cases these deportees have no money, little education, few relatives or friends to whom they can turn, and many are truly violent and lawless. The culture of drugs and guns that many carry back to their native lands is wreaking havoc in nations that receive them in substantial numbers.

Mark Frauenfelder: Scott says: "The Animation Show is opening up in Atlanta today. Check out this cool Tim Biskup poster."
Images Press Poster 05 Originally from California, Tim Biskup was raised on Disneyland, Rat Fink, badly dubbed Japanese Sci-Fi flicks, punk rock, skateboarding and underground comics. In the mid-eighties he left Otis/Parsons School of Design to seek his fortune in the world of illustration. His career included designing for skateboard companies and record labels. (a highlight being his work for Ralph Records and his heroes the Residents). His obsession with the art of Mary Blair led him to a career in animation. This career has involved him in countless cartoons, including his own short "Freddy Seymore's Amazing Life" for Nickelodeon and background supervisor for Cartoon Network's "Time Squad." In 1998, Biskup began hosting and curating the Burning Brush auctions, has been in a vast array of exhibitions and has currently launched a line of tee shirts and gift items under the GAMA-GO label.

Are the Tyco executives criminals?

Are the Tyco executives criminals? 04/09/2004 04:11 PM

The Tyco CEO and CFO are in the news right now after a mistrial (st ory).  Allegedly they looted $600 million from the company.  This sounds bad but if you look at this profile of Tyco, the $600 mil is less than the most recent quarter's income of $720 million and only about 1% of the company's market value of $58 billion.  Let's compare that to some other looters in the news:

  • Richard Grasso took $200 million or so that he took from the New York Stock Exchange, a non-profit org.  Grasso's haul is roughly comparable to ten years of profits for the NYSE.  Grasso got his looting approved by his friends on the Board and therefore won't face criminal prosecution though the NY State attorney general is trying to force him to repay some of his booty.
  • Jack Welch, in his autobiography, talks about having transferred 30 percent of General Electric from the investors into the hands of "employees" (the lions share to himself and a few other top guys presumably).
  • William T. Esrey and Ronald LeMay looted $311 million in one year alone from Sprint, about half of the company's profits in a good year.  They were not prosecuted for their looting but the IRS became upset with their scheme to avoid paying any taxes on this income.

From the very fact of their prosecution we can infer that the Tyco guys did not dot their i's and cross their t's as effectively as the average corporate looter but is there any evidence that their looting was above average?
