Florida Town To Record All Drivers

Florida Town To Record All Drivers 04/28/2004 01:12 PM
A town in Florida has decided that you don't need any privacy if you dare to drive through their town. They're setting up a system of cameras that will take photos of license plates and drivers of all cars and record that info in a database. The database will also cross-check the license plate to see if you happen to be driving a stolen car, and alert the police immediately. They will also use the system to pinpoint who drove where at what time when investigating robberies. The police chief in charge of the program shrugs off any privacy concerns, noting that the roads are public so people should "have no expectation of privacy." Next thing you know, they'll just put GPS chips in everyone so that they know where everyone is at all times.

Pentagon Can't Even Keep Track Of The
Systems That Keep Track Of Stuff
07/08/2004 12:33 PM
The Pentagon certainly isn't known for efficiency in their business processes, and no one ever said they needed to be run in the same manner as a profitable business, but the fact that they can't even track the thousands of different databases and logistics systems that are supposed to keep track of all of their purchases and assets is a bit worrisome. At the very least it's a huge recipe for fraud, with plenty of already greedy enough defense contractors clearly abusing the system for great profit to themselves -- at the expense of our own tax dollars.

One of the more fascinating moments of today's White House press conference with Bush and Allawi came when the president, who claims to pay scant attention to public opinion polling (that's something Clintons do), referred to "right track/wrong track" polling in Iraq like he was George Gallup himself:

Sometimes it's really interesting to live in the centre of the administrative capital of the Netherlands. As this is close to the parliament buildings a lot of camera crews had chosen the city hall to film some voters, including me. ?

Do Red Light Cameras Help?

Do Red Light Cameras Help? 01/05/2005 10:30 PM
We've had a number of stories about problems with speed cameras, but similar problems apply to red light cameras as well. Of course, the biggest question is whether or not these cameras help make the roads safer. The problem is that the incentive of those installing the cameras is often to maximize revenue. Thus, they choose locations that are high traffic -- but not necessarily dangerous. In some cases, such as in San Diego, it turned out that officials reduced the length of the yellow light on traffic lights where speed cameras were positioned, in order to create more violations. While studies have shown that locations that have red light cameras do reduce side impact accidents, they increase rear impact accidents, because people slam on the brakes to avoid getting caught by the camera. The net effect, however, is in dispute. Some say that the reduction in side impact crashes outweighs slower rear impact crashes -- which may be true. Of course, if officials really want to stop side impact crashes from people running red lights, it seems there's a much simpler and more effective solution. Some locations do this, but I've never understood why it's not more popular: have a period of time when lights in both directions are red. That is, when the lights for one roadway turns red, don't immediately turn the cross traffic lights green. Give it a second, allowing the stragglers to get through, and then let the other traffic go. Of course, if this were all about safety that's what would happen -- and it's pretty clear that safety is coming second to revenue in many of these cases.

3D in Depth: Cameras

3D in Depth: Cameras 01/08/2004 07:07 PM
This month, we'll have a look at cameras and how you can use them to make your 3D scenes come alive. In 3D, physical limitations don't exist. You can move a camera to any location and even inside the tiniest objects. This offers some fascinating possibilities. By Nathan Segal. 0108

Cameras, Privacy And The Law

Cameras, Privacy And The Law 02/17/2004 06:31 PM
Found over at Alan Reiter's Camera Phone Report is this story written by a Kansas City Star columnist talking about how everyone's overreacting to the "dangers" of camera phones by worrying about a specific technology, rather than the misuse of that technology. The writer lists a bunch of other devices (including watches and MP3 players) that include cameras, but which no one is calling to ban. However, his overall point is that technology trumps privacy - and on top of that, technology trumps the law. The issue we should be focusing on, according to the article, is making laws that protect privacy, not ones that outlaw technology. Then, if someone is using the technology to violate someone's privacy, you go after them for breaking the privacy law - not the law banning the, otherwise useful, technology. Makes sense. Of course, if you then combine it with another article (found at Smart Mobs), it raises other questions. This is a case where a man with a wireless security camera system realized that he was getting video from a neighbor's security camera instead of his own - and witnessed the neighbor abusing her foster children. He called the police and the woman was quickly arrested, which is clearly a good thing. However, where does the law stand on video like that, which is accidentally intercepted? Is it only a privacy violation if the voyeurism is intentional? Clearly, there are a lot of new legal and privacy issues raised by new technologies - and trying to simply outlaw technology or cram new technologies into old laws isn't going to cut it.

Secret cameras revealed!

Secret cameras revealed! 11/15/2003 04:35 PM
How to find hidden cameras:
Some methods to hide cameras solely rely on the way human perception works. A very simple way to "hide" a camera is to install it at a large distance from the space to be surveilled. This does not restrict the usefulness of the camera images in any way because tele lenses can be used to compensate for the distance. For this application there is no need for subminiature cameras, although these are even easier to hide. Standard surveillance cameras painted the right color are very hard to spot and usually have a CMount or CS-Mount 7 socket which is needed for attaching the necessary high quality tele lens.

I just stopped by Amazon to check on some Web services stuff and noticed that they have all their Olympus cameras on sale, including the all-weather 3.2MP one I almost bought instead of my Sony camera. The Sony was my second choice, but I was impatient and Best Buy was out of the Olympus. I’m happy with the Sony and glad I bought it, but the Olympus has a lot of great features too.

UK Cameras To Count Your Passengers

UK Cameras To Count Your Passengers 07/28/2004 01:06 PM
Remember all the controversy over speed cameras that tended to make spectacularly amusing mistakes? Well, that hasn't stopped the UK from trying to move forward with special infrared cameras designed to do even more advanced things, such as counting the number of passengers in your car to prevent cheaters from using the carpool/HOV lanes. The researchers working on the technology claim that it can distinguish between a human and other non-human passenger items such as a mannequin or a large dog. Of course, it's not as imaginative as the CarpoolCheats.org folks, who went around snapping pictures of people cheating their way in the carpool lane, but that site's been shut down by angry carpool cheaters, unfortunately.

Digital Video Cameras

I need some recommendations for a digital video camera. My requisites are few: It needs to be fairly inexpensive (under $500), use FireWire for transfer and have a track record for working well with Macs.

It need not be a spectacular camera, but one of the best I can get for my price range.

Police Don't Like Speed Cameras Either

Police Don't Like Speed Cameras Either 05/14/2004 10:11 PM
We've had a bunch of stories about how speed cameras don't seem to work very well, and now, even some police officers are against them, saying that they are "harming their relationship with the public." They're worried that people are blaming the speed camera mishaps on police who just want to bring in more revenue. They want a study conducted on whether or not the cameras are actually needed. Of course, another interpretation of the police being against the cameras is they're afraid that they're about to be automated out of a job. This explains why much of the discussion focuses on why a human police officer can do a better job than a camera.
