Google upgrades search appliance
06/02/2004 08:01 PM“The Google Search Appliance is a simple engine designed to help
companies manage their internal and external content without a lot of
headaches. It installs quickly and can handle 1.5 million documents,
which is five times as many documents as its predecessor’s
capacity, according to Dave Girouard, general manager of the
enterprise group at Google. It’s also faster: Google increased
the appliance’s query performance fivefold, from 60 queries per
minute to 300 queries per minute, Girouard says.”

05/26/2004 10:20 AMBoingboing reader Greg asks,
I find it interesting to note that Google image search doesn't have
any of the pics of the Abu Ghraib abuse that are floating everywhere
else on the net. A search for "Abu Ghraib" does bring up photos, but
none of the ones that we all saw on CNN and in the Wall Street
Journal. I had searched there not long after the story broke and found
none of them, but I figured it was just too new. Now, after weeks of
spidering time, they still aren't there. Anyone have an idea why?

Google Adds Image Ads
Google Adds Image Ads
05/12/2004 06:54 PMOne of the things that people always like about Google's advertising
was that they stuck by their plan to do only non-intrusive,
non-annoying, non-flashy text ads that got to the point. Well, it
looks like they've had enough of that.
Search
Engine Journal notes that
Google is now
adding traditional image ads to their ad inventory. For now, it
appears that these won't be used on search results, but only on
content pages with Google contextual advertising. This suggests that
the standard Google ad box has become so universal that (as expected)
most people have learned to ignore it completely, so it was time for
Google to try something different (which, strangely enough, seems a
lot like what others have been offering for ages).
