First UK Phishing Arrest - Catching Clueless Kids Instead Of Real Criminals

First UK Phishing Arrest - Catching
Clueless Kids Instead Of Real Criminals

First UK Phishing Arrest - Catching
Clueless Kids Instead Of Real Criminals
04/29/2004 11:56 AM

Over in the UK the police are especially happy after they've tracked down and arrested someone for running a phishing scam. They say this is the first UK arrest for phishing. However, like a similar case in the US, it sounds like this was just one individual who wasn't particularly sophisticated in running a phishing scam. Most such scams are run by organized crime groups - but, so far, no one has been able to track them down. So, while it's good that we're catching some people, it's unlikely to do very much to slow down most of these scams.

MP3 Players Aren't Just For Kids; In
Fact They're Barely For Kids
12/19/2004 03:47 PM
The common bit of wisdom is that MP3s are a young person's technology. It's the teens and the folks just coming out of college that are the MP3 generation, after all, so they'd be the most likely to own an MP3 player, right? Not at all, apparently. A new study says that 90% of MP3 player owners over 34 years old. While this may have something to do with the high price of many of the best MP3 players, the numbers still don't seem right. It would be interesting to see the methodology behind this study. That's not to say that those over 34 aren't likely to own an MP3 player, but it's hard to believe that 90% of MP3 players go to those 35 and older.

Presents For Bad Kids Head To eBay,
Rather Than Kids

Well, normally, people wait until after they've received presents to dump them on eBay. However, one father who felt his three sons were being particularly bad lately decided that to punish them he's putting their presents up for sale on eBay. To be honest, this sounds like a bit of a publicity stunt -- and it seems likely that, now that this is getting attention, that casino that seems to be buying e very random quirky auction item will snap this one up. Update: Whoops. It's apparently already happened. Indeed, the casino in question has d ecided to buy the undelivered presents. This is sort of an update on our story last year about how sellers were increasingly looking to use eBay as a publicity generating tool. It appears that's now being used by buyers to generate publicity, as well.

Clueless in Berkeley

Clueless in Berkeley 07/12/2004 04:07 PM
I have written before of my love for my favorite feature in the Berkeley Daily Planet, the Police Blotter. Today while reading it, I ran across this absolute gem which caused me to lose a mouthful of hot Peet's coffee in front of the Cheeseboard. Knife-Wielder Earns Cellular Domicile A 48-year-old Berkeley man found himself with a new and tightly confined residence after police busted him for flashing a knife at a fellow citizen near the corner of Center Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way at 9:37 a.m. Friday. The felon seems to have overlooked that building on the corner and all those blue-clad badge-wearing folks who pass through its portals en route to their black-and-white cars. (For those of you unfamiliar with Berkeley geography, our new police headquarters is at the corner of MLK and Center.) How do you get a job writing stuff like this? I want one. It made my day....

In Wired's July issue, Contributing writer Cory Doctorow writes about the movie I, Robot, in a slam at the late Dr. Isaac Asimov titled Rise of the Machines. I would rather Wired had found someone who had actually read more than two or three Asimov short stories. There is a lot in this article that is debatable but presented as concrete fact, and other "facts" which are downright false.

Clueless Article About Canada's Wi-Fi
Scene

Clueless Article About Canada's Wi-Fi
Scene
02/16/2004 01:25 PM
This writer seems to enjoy writing as though he's an authority when it's clear he's not: He's read all the hype about Wi-Fi but gets enough wrong that he obviously hasn't done his own research. His general point is that Canada is behind the United States in deploying hotspots. But he hasn't got very good research to back that up. His strongest piece of evidence seems to be a conversation he had recently with one computer programmer who had never heard of Wi-Fi. He goes on to say that the market is primed to change dramatically because Canada's largest carriers said they'd create a unified standard to let customers roam between their networks. This so-called standard was developed without any of the major existing Canadian Wi-Fi operators, such as FatPort, and none of the four carriers involved had deployed hotspots when they set the roaming standard. It's also just a "standard" (how they'll handle billing, etc.), not a roaming deal. So the carriers could deploy networks and still not roam. (Meanwhile, FatPort has built hundreds of locations and secured roaming with several international networks.) He also pointed to a recent study that said no hotspots' business model could succeed if the only revenue source was connection fees. That study is bad news for cafes in the U.S., he says, because many of them offer access for free. But the two aren't related. Free hotspot operators have a totally different business model than those that charge. He closes by pointing out "guerilla Wi-Fi warriors" in Canada who warchalk. Warchalking is a great idea and testament to the community behind Wi-Fi, but who has actually seen a symbol? If this writer's point is that Wi-Fi hasn't taken off in Canada, then it's doubtful that people there are actually warchalking....

Whose criminals are they?

Whose criminals are they? 11/17/2003 10:04 PM
Whose criminals are they? Canada and the U.S. are deporting immigrant criminals back to the Caribbean -- criminals who were born there but, in many cases, raised in North America. Whose problem are they? Virtually every Caribbean country feels the burden of the deportations, espe cially from the U.S., which, in 1998, deported 55,500 "aliens" on criminal grounds, 3,700 to the Caribbean. Defenders of the deportations say Canada and the U.S. are just getting rid of bad apples, many of whom shouldn't be here in the first place. But The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) says that, frequently, the deportees have little more than place of birth to connect them to the region. In most cases these deportees have no money, little education, few relatives or friends to whom they can turn, and many are truly violent and lawless. The culture of drugs and guns that many carry back to their native lands is wreaking havoc in nations that receive them in substantial numbers.

Forty years ago today 02/15/2004 02:33 PM
Actually, it was in 1960, four years before the Beatles showed up on Ed Sullivan, that Doug McIlroy published Macro instruction extensions of compiler languages, which appears to be a seminal paper in the literature of metaprogramming. I mention this because a number of folks have responded to last week's item, Programs that write programs, pointing out that Lisp programmers have been there, done that:
"your note about code generation, and the referenced discussions - bits of which i'd already read elsewhere, left me with a really eerie feeling, that i might not be living in the same dimension with you folks. you see, there's a practice of code generation which extends back decades: lisp. code generations is a lisp programmer's bread and butter."
"In the lisp world, they call these macros. The idea is pretty widely known, though not too many languages implement them. Perl 6, and by extension the Parrot interpreter, will include macros, and they will thus be available to any language that gets implemented on top of Parrot (which currently includes Ruby, Python, (maybe) PHP, and, of course, Perl)."

The U.S. National Library of Medicine recently announced that 40 projects designed to improve access to electronic health information for the general public have been funded through the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Projects, scattered among 24 states, range from disseminating information on rare disorders, to maintaining Web sites for specific groups, to ratcheting up existing healthcare information Web sites. For example, the Periodic Paralysis Association of Monrovia, Calif., plans to use its grant to develop a Web-based video library to enhance the diagnostic knowledge base for this class of rare neurological disorders. The Florida Gulfcoast North Area Health Education Center and two other partners will expand and support the Florida School Nurse Project, which will include training and access to health information for school nurses and related professionals. And the Mississippi Valley State University James Herbert White Library and partners from local Golden Age Club and Boys and Girls Club will establish a program to train youth and senior adults in locating and using electronic health information. All projects will last up to 18 months. (National Library of Medicine 23 Aug 2004)

Phishing for the end

Phishing for the end 08/17/2004 04:56 PM
"This site was created with one goal; to create the most comprehensive online archive of information and digital photos of the Coventry Vermont Phish show, August 14th and 15th 2004." Seems odd to think folks went to the trouble of dedicating an entire website to just a single concert, until you learn it was the very last one for Phish.

Political Phishing

Political Phishing 08/03/2004 12:32 PM
It's election season, and that means that, just like with all the other news-sensitive scams, phishers are getting political. The latest is a phishing email that simply copied a donation request from the John Kerry campaign, but changed the link to a fake site. Of course, the folks behind the scam made one very stupid mistake: remotely using an image hosted on the Kerry website -- which was quickly changed by the campaign to explain that the site was a scam (though, it's likely this confused some people -- hopefully enough to stop them from donating). Still, it's likely that the next version won't make the same mistake. With the success phishing emails have had lately, and the fervor with which people seem to be donating to campaigns, an awful lot of cash supposedly going to campaigns is going to be making criminals wealthy.

Phishing behind Google

Phishing behind Google 08/28/2004 01:03 AM

I just received a phishing email purporting to be from PayPal.  No surprise there since I get many of them everyday, but I looked closer at this one because it looked very professionally done.  I looked at the raw message and found this odd link:

This particular phisher is bouncing off Google to hide itself from domain name-based phishing detectors and scanners.  Clever.  Clicking on the link will open a browser to Google's URL search CGI which will automatically redirect the browser to the phishing site at IP address 209.152.181.10.  This trick will bypass phishing detectors that examines only the domain name part of a URL to see if it looks suspicious.

So the lesson here for security developers is to look at all the parameters and to keep track of oh-so-helpful redirectors like Google.  Also, website developers should keep in mind that helpful service is helpful to all, including the bad guys, and they might become an unwitting partner in crime.  For lawyers, it's a new source of income concern.

Phishing and Bouncing

Phishing and Bouncing 09/12/2004 12:36 PM

Looks like the trick of using redirection CGIs at popular website (described in Phishing with Google) is getting popular among phishers. I just got a couple that uses AOL's redir-complex CGI at:

http://r.aol.com/cgi/redir-complex?url=whereever

Note that phishers can use not just the redirecting CGIs, but also those CGIs that use return URL as parameters.  In fact, these types of CGIs are popular among financial institutions and single-sign on services.  For example, both Passport and 3D-Secure uses them.
