Virtual Schools, Real Connections?

Virtual Schools, Real Connections? 01/04/2005 03:17 PM
It's not entirely clear why some people still insist that just because communication is done via a computer screen, it's somehow "less personal." Plenty of studies (and personal experiences) have shown that computers and the internet have helped many people build strong personal relationships with others, where it would have been nearly impossible without those tools. However, some people simply can't let go of the idea that it's somehow a lower quality relationship. That's prompted a teacher for an online distance learning K-12 program to write up a response to someone who claimed that students couldn't be truly inspired by a distance learning teacher. The teacher, who previously had taught in traditional schools has found the opposite to be true. Yes, there are differences. Certain aspects of an in-classroom experience cannot adequately be reproduced. But, at the same time, the online interaction can often allow for a much more personalized experience that does inspire the students. It's just not always in the same way as an in classroom experience might.

Real Economies In Virtual Worlds

Real Economies In Virtual Worlds 05/10/2004 02:58 AM
We've had numerous discussions about legal issues associated with virtual worlds, but there are also plenty of economic issues (which often are related to the legal ones). Wired News is running an article looking at some of the economic info available about various online games and comes to the conclusion that the only thing that really matters is if the game is still enjoyable to its players (which seems fairly obvious). It's not important that a virtual economy be a "successful" economy in the traditional sense as long as it's fun for the players. Of course, a disastrous in-game economy isn't going to be that much fun, which is why many more games (usually from the smaller online gaming companies) are paying a lot more attention to the in-game economic situation.

Virtual hooking, real censorship in The
Sims Online
12/15/2003 11:35 AM
An independent in-game newspaper published in The Sims Online is being censored by Maxis for running ads for underage in-game sex.
So The Alphaville Herald continues to push the edge of the envelope. In this case the envelope has "Underage Child Sexual Solicitation in Virtual Worlds" written all over it. They're running a mind-boggling interview with an avatar who's been turning tricks in TSO since the early days. Since this sexual activity involves real money, an under-age protagonist, and the violation of a serious number of federal and state sexual solicitation statutes, it's your required reading for the day. Call it research.

Oh, did we mention that Maxis, the developers of TSO, have started to delete in-world references to The Alphaville Herald?

Hogzilla is real. And now, he's real

03/22/2005 05:00 PM
Xeni Jardin: A team of National Geographic experts with nothing better to do confirmed the existence of Georgia's monster hog, "Hogzilla."
They also noted the super swine didn't quite live up to the 1,000-pound, 12-foot hype generated when Hogzilla was caught on a farm last summer and photographed hanging from a backhoe. Donning biohazard suits to exhume the behemoth's smelly remains, the experts estimated Hogzilla was probably only 7 1/2 to 8 feet long, and weighed about 800 pounds. The confirmation came in a documentary aired Sunday night on the National Geographic Channel; it will be rebroadcast Wednesday and Saturday.

Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?

Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?
12/04/2003 03:52 AM
Last month when everyone was making a big deal over the news that the online game Second Life had decided that players own any intellectual property they create in the game, I said it was a bad idea, since it basically took all of the problems of our intellectual property system and moved them into the virtual world - where it was likely to get more confusing. Over at LawMeme, James Grimmelmann, has been thinking a lot about that very idea and has written an insanely long - but absolutely worth reading - discussion about intellectual property issues as it relates to games. It's impossible to summarize his points, but he explores many of the issues in-depth and appears to have thought about these issues in much more detail than the designers of the various games. What it really seems to come down to is the question of whether or not in-game actions are simply covered by the End User License Agreement (which basically becomes the Constitution for that game) or if real laws in the real world should apply.
