Over at the Planetowrk Journal, Duncan Work has proposed a social networking bill of rights, elaborating on these 5 principles:

1. The right to know who is collecting what and for what purposes;
2. The right to not participate;
3. The right to clear and, in some cases, irrevocable privacy policies;
4. The right to control access to personal information and attention;
5. The right to participate in a global social networking system without restrictive barriers.

It’s wrapped up in something that’s a bit too much of an ad for LinkedIn for my taste, but it’s an interesting start. #3, especially, will be interesting to see in practice, since the courts have usually allowed a wide degree of freedom for companies to unilaterally change their bargain with users, especially for businesses in bankruptcy, which triggers freedom from all manner of contractual obligations. Would be fun to write the contract that is designed to survive that sort of change of control for the data.

The world's largest truck is the Liebherr T 282B, used for hauling in the mining industry. At more than 24 feet tall and 47 feet long, the 224-ton monstrosity can still putt along at 40 miles per hour. New Scientist has published an interview with Francis Bartley, head of R&D for Liebherr:

"The first time I was in it at a mine, the driver started to drive away and actually ran into the back of a service truck. It seems we mashed it down to the ground. I saw someone yelling, but we didn't feel a thing."

I don't come from a family of car people, you know, those kind of people that actually car about cars, buy new cars, keep their cars clean, and/or actually name their cars. No, my parents represented that rarest of California demographic during their eight years in the Bay Area: the one car family. Nearly my whole life our four-person family had one solid, dependable car. Nothing too flashy, and rarely anything new. At this very moment, my parents swear their current car (purchased used) is satisfactory, even though they just had the door welded back on because it was rusted through and nearly fell off. So imagine my surprise this summer when I discovered that there was a vehicle for me! After years of avoiding driving as much as possible, and in general demonstrating great distain for all things car, I've unlocked one of my life's mysteries. You know how they say you really figure out who you are in your thirties? Well I've discovered I am a truck person! I've been lucky to have a 1996 Ford pick-up at my disposal this summer, and boy have I enjoyed tooling around in it! Aside from its obvious greatness due to its green color, it's also just fun. It bumps along the dirt roads in a very satisfying manner. Its bed is perfect for holding my clamming gear, or mulch, or just beach chairs. And everywhere I go, I share knowing nods with other island pick-up truck drivers. Yup, I may not be a car person. But I sure am a truck person.

While my first response would probably be Slashdot, too, in this case we're describing the Liebherr T 282B truck, a 224 ton monster with a massive 3650-horsepower diesel engine. New Scientist has an interview with Liebherr R&D head Francis Bartleby in which he drops a load of tasty T 282B trivia, like the fact that the huge diesel engine actually generates electricity to power two electric drive motors, and the story about the time a driver of one of the big trucks accidentally crushed a normal-sized service truck and didn't even notice.

We made a rule in the house this year that packages mailed to us and still unopened count as wrapping, whether or not the things inside are wrapped as well (we have no way of knowing). You can't see what's inside the boxes so it does the same thing as wrapping. It also cuts out a stupid step where you have to open a present for someone, wrap it, then have them open it on xmas day.

But not this year, brown boxes count just as much as holiday paper wrapping.
