RealNetworks may not be alone for too long in its antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft.

The Seattle-based company sued Microsoft Thursday in federal court in San Jose, Calif., claiming the software giant is illegally using its Windows monopoly to dominate the digital media market. RealNetworks is seeking damages that could exceed a billion dollars, in addition to a court order preventing future illegal conduct from the Redmond, Wash.-based, Microsoft.

While RealNetworks is the only plaintiff in the suit, experts say it could be helped later by other companies with similar concerns within their own markets.

As expected, given a few days to look over the fact that RealNet works had made iPods just slightly more usable by coming up with a way that people buying songs in Real's download store could move those songs to an iPod, Apple has responded quite angrily, claiming they're "stunned that RealNetworks has adopted the tactics and ethics of a hacker to break into the iPod." That's right. How dare they come up with a way to make the product appeal to more people!

Try, try again. It seems that even if Microsoft can shake the government's antitrust pursuit, they're still getting hit from other angles. The latest is that RealNetworks has filed an antitrust suit against Microsoft, claiming that they're using their operating system monopoly to limit choice on digital media. They're going to ask for somewhere around $1 billion dollars. Microsoft has done an amazing job shaking off every such lawsuit in the past. You wonder if, one day, one of these will stick.
