by Scott Bekker

SAN DIEGO —
Microsoft on Tuesday formally extended support for all of its business
software by a minimum of three years, clarifying the company’s
support plans as ship dates for major Microsoft infrastructure
products have slipped by several years.
“We will move from seven years to a minimum of 10 years support
for all of our business software,” Andrew Lees, corporate vice
president for servers and tools, said to applause in a speech at
Microsoft’s TechEd 2004 conference on Tuesday. “

As discussed previously in

like NASA didn't want to devote the resourses necessary to maintain
the 14 year old telescope.

Microsoft Java software gets a reprieve
until 2007
04/14/2004 02:14 AMUsers of Microsoft Corp.'s Java Virtual Machine (JVM) have an extra
three years to drop the software and migrate to Microsoft's .Net or a
competing Java product following the company's broad deal with Sun
Microsystems Inc. early this month.
Microsoft was set to end support for its JVM on Sept. 30, much to the
dismay of developers who built applications to work with the software.
Now Microsoft has extended security patch support for its JVM until
Dec. 31, 2007, Brian Keller, a Microsoft product manager, said
Tuesday. Security patches are the only support Microsoft currently
provides for the JVM.
"This is certainly very good for many of our customers. It means they
have over three additional years to migrate their applications. In
some cases those applications were already set to retire before 2007,"
Keller said. The extension was agreed on in the settlement and
collaboration pact Microsoft struck with Sun Microsystems Inc. early
this month.

12/09/2003 09:46 AMMicrosoft will continue to support its Java virtual machine till
September 2004, a nine-month extension that will make it easier for
customers to find substitutes for the software.
The extension was largely implemented for the convenience of the
software-buying world, according to representatives from Microsoft and
Sun Microsystems. Microsoft has recently been encouraging customers to
eliminate its Java virtual machine (JVM) from their desktops,
notebooks and servers pursuant to an out-of-court settlement with Sun,
but the transition is taking longer than anticipated.

Possibly off to Microsoft in October
09/08/2004 05:15 AMReceived a interesting e-mail today from someone at Microsoft. I
will be calling in the morning to verify this is a real person in
Redmond and not some scam. If it turns out to be the real deal I will
be headed to Redmond to get a look at a product line. I am going to
refrain from even saying what the product is. Needless to say I have
some experience in the subject matter and would love to get in on the
testing. I have a crazy schedule in October but I will simply have to
clear the calendar for the two days the meetings are on. Typical NDA
stuff will apply no biggy I have worked within the constraints of
NDA's for a long time.
This could turn out to be fun.
