Selling On eBay As A PR Tactic

Selling On eBay As A PR Tactic 12/18/2003 02:13 PM
It just won't stop. If you have something odd or strange to sell the trick is to put it up on eBay. Not just because it's the marketplace where many people go, but big or weird items on eBay are like an automatic ticket to press coverage. So, despite the fact that it's been done before, a town in Arizona is trying to sell itself on eBay. Basically, eBay has become both a selling platform and a publicity platform.

One year after Bray's brilliant tactic

One year after Bray's brilliant tactic 07/07/2004 02:24 PM

A picture named bray.jpgPaul Boutin notes, as I did, that MSN readers are uniformly polite and informative. Then I read a brief post from Tim Bray, who has been the opposite to me in the past, and he says he's seen the growth that is going on today in the weblog world, in the Web, ten years ago. This reminds me that Tim compared my contribution to that of Charles Goldfarb, the inventor of SGML, in a totally condescending post last year, and ignited a flamewar, and that's been his major contribution to this space, as far as I'm concerned.

I tried to explain to Tim then (not that he was listening of course) that RSS was just part of the picture, and to see it only as an XML format was to miss the point, that there were applications on both sides of RSS, content management software and aggregators, and lots of people, that made it really work. To think you could swap out the format was as silly as thinking you could swap out HTML or HTTP in 1994. Yet that is exactly what Tim and his colleagues tried to do. If instead there were a pause for thought, just a tiny bit of respect to balance the bluster, he could have saved a bunch of time and effort. He still could.

Steve Gillmor tagged Bray then as a master tactician, I guess so, but at least a little strategy should be behind every tactic. It's still not too late to get back on course Tim, I'll accept your retraction when you make it, but so far, that hasn't happened.

Like so many others, you came to conquer, and fa iled. Now what?

Gore: Cheney tactic "sleazy and
despicable"
09/09/2004 12:49 PM
Dick Cheney's "vote for us or you'll pay with your life" comments earlier this week shocked many people, but Cheney hasn't retracted his statement. When Bush was asked about Cheney's comments yesterday, he just stared at the reporter. Aides to Cheney said his language may have been a bit harsh, but the underlying message was right on. As Adam Nagourney pointed out in today's New York Times, Republicans may express more delicately in the weeks ahead the notion that voting for Kerry is akin to begging for another 9/11 -- but this threat will certainly be repeated in one form or another until Election Day.

A couple of days ago my sister cc'd me on the ACLU Pizza movie -- a digital identity nightmare done as a Flash animation. "Very interesting," she wrote to her friends, "and probably not too far from the truth." I'd seen this movie a while back, so I pondered for a moment about the ongoing effect it might be having and then moved on. Then today it came back to me, via Phil Windley, via Kim Cameron, via Future Salon. I wondered how this particular meme has been flowing through the collective mind. So I took a picture of that: ...

ACLU seeks Sanchez perjury investigation. As a followup to yesterday's post, the ACLU has sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Gonzales, requesting an investigation of Gen. Ricardo Sanchez for perjury before Congress. Sanchez is accused of lying about approving guidelines for the use of abusive interrogation techniques at Abu Ghraib prison. Now, many of you might think that Gonzales might refuse this request and be done with it. However, the ACLU has the right to request a writ of mandamus, which would compel Gonzales to initiate an investigation. If Sanchez is investigated, will he be pressured to reveal the identity of those in the Pentagon / Bush administration (Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Feith, Cheney, Cambone?!) who knew about and possibly ordered these policies?

ACLU solicits feedback on airport
"pat-down" searches

ACLU solicits feedback on airport
"pat-down" searches
12/26/2004 06:32 PM
Xeni Jardin: Snipped from Declan's politech list -- ACLU Technology and Liberty Project Director Barry Steinhardt says,
A September 2004 TSA directive granting airport security screeners broad leeway to conduct "pat-down" searches has led to numerous reports of sexual harassment and abuse.

Victims -- particularly women-- are reporting that they are not being offered private searches or searches by screeners of the same sex, and that "private" searches are being conducted behind screens that provide no privacy. Passengers are reporting rough, rude, and humiliating manhandling and groping of their breasts and crotch areas, demeaning sexual comments, and being forced to remove business jackets in full view of crowds, despite the fact that it is a widespread convention in our society for women to wear only bras or other undergarments underneath such jackets.

The ACLU is assessing possible responses to this policy. In doing so, it is extremely helpful for us to gain a sense of the kinds of abuses that are taking place. If list members have experienced a problem with pat-down searches at airport security, they can help us end this problem by reporting their story here. For more information on the abuses, Politiech readers might want to look here, where we have collected many of the news stories.

The American Civil Liberties Union has sued the government on behalf of seven U.S. citizens who've been subjected to a Kafka-esque security system when trying to fly. Read the documents on the ACLU's site and you'll see that the system is sloppy and unfair, and probably counter-productive in stopping actual terrorists when it wastes such time on entirely innocent people who get on these watchlists and can't get off.
