XXX coming to the net

XXX coming to the net 06/06/2005 12:01 AM

It's to bad really that ICANN buckled to pressure and has agreed to allow the xxx domains go forward. Being that they have I wish their was a way to take all of them that exsist on com, org, biz etc and shove them over there and forever ban them from the other extensions. But this will never happen. But at least from my perspective that segment will be easy to ban in all of my machines. [Yahoo]

Wi-MAX Shakeup Coming Soon

Wi-MAX Shakeup Coming Soon 11/19/2003 03:29 PM
Pyramid Research makes some interesting observations about the future of WiMAX: The researchers speculate that Nextel might starting deploying WiMAX as early as 2005. Nextel has been very slow, compared to its competitors, to mark a path toward achieving higher data rates. The company just announced it will enhance its network to quadruple current data rates. While that sounds exciting, the enhancement only boosts throughput to less than dial-up modem speed. I'm not exactly sure why Pyramid thinks that WiMAX would make a good fit for Nextel, given Nextel's historical reluctance to stray from its existing iDEN network technology. But it would be great to see a major player like Nextel chase WiMAX. Pyramid also expects significant growth for WiMAX but not nearly as much as Intel expects....

Puffin is Coming

Puffin is Coming 05/19/2004 01:13 PM

Goo gle ready for clash with Microsoft: Google is planning to release a PC search tool for indexing files and such on your machine.

Google's software, which is expected to be introduced soon, according to several people with knowledge of the company's plans, is the clearest indication to date that the company, based in Mountain View, Calif., hopes to extend its search business to compete directly with Microsoft's control of desktop computing.

It's code-named "Puffin," which I really hope is going to change before release. This report goes on to mype the looming Google - Microsoft battle by saying that:

[Longhorn] ... will have a redesigned file system, making it possible to track and retrieve information in ways not currently possible with Windows software.

Oh. but it won't, making Google's plans all the more timely. Redmond may have unwittingly surrendered a market here.

EDRs Are Coming

EDRs Are Coming 08/11/2004 01:46 PM

2008--Not '1984': My kid will be 14 in 2008 — coming up on driving age. I really, really want one of these for his car. As for mine, however, all I have is indignation at the invasion of my privacy.

Big brother will be watching you for sure by 2008 — the year Event Data Recorders (EDRs) will become mandatory standard equipment in all new cars and trucks unless public outrage somehow puts the kibosh on a proposed law.

EDRs are "black boxes" much like the ones airplanes have. They can record a wide variety of things — including how fast you drive and whether you "buckle up for safety."

Miles, the tinyapps.org guy, points us to a an article about yet another Microsoft vulnerability. It turns out that there's a way that just downloading a jpg can let a virus in. You can run a utility on this page to see if your machine is vulnerable (mine was), and there's also a link to the page with the plug for the hole. It does not require you to upgrade to SP2, a fate some of us are postponing. What next, viruses that get in if you type too slowly?...

Soon afterwards the MyDoom virus shut Google down for reportedly 4 hours, overloading it with requests for email addresses to spam. Finally, an interesting age discrimination lawsuit: "Brian Reid charges that Google routinely discriminates against employees over the age of 40 in its recruiting, hiring and employment practices. Reid, who is 54, contends that he was terminated from his position as director of operations because of his age and ongoing health issues related to diabetes." (Tx Bill.)...
