Agents of Change by Patrick Thibodeau

Autonomous agents could one day play a key role in everything from setting market prices to creating more resilient networks. Over the past year, NASA has been uploading software into the Earth Observing-1 satellite, turning it into a testbed for autonomous agents. The agents -- software programs that are able to learn and can function independently -- are used to manage experiments and operate the spacecraft. The effort is part of a technology initiative that researchers say will reshape IT over the course of many years. Autonomous agents have the potential to become an extraordinarily powerful technology, with the capacity to learn, experiment and act independent of human control. Agents could ultimately improve productivity, increase software reliability and change the operation of markets, particularly supply chains.

The DIET Agents platform has been released as Open Source. It is a light-weight, multi-agent platform for decentralised computing. A bottom-up design was used to ensure that the platform is lightweight, scalable, robust, adaptive and extensible. It is especially suitable for rapidly developing peer-to-peer prototype applications and adaptive, distributed applications that use bottom-up or nature-inspired techniques. The platform is available from the DIET Agents website. The website also provides other resources, such as details about the design philosophy, a tutorial, API documentation, access to mailing lists and a basic visualiser.

MIT Media Lab: Software Agents
http://agents.media.mit. edu/index.html

The Software Agents Group of the MIT Media Laboratory "investigates computer systems to which one can delegate tasks." Software agents are different from conventional software because they are "long-lived, semi-autonomous, proactive, and adaptive." Software Agents Group focuses on creating software that "acts as an assistant to the user rather than a tool, learning from interaction and proactively anticipating the user's needs." The website describes the group's various projects that use "common sense reasoning" to Enable the Semantic Web, to improve video came design, or to Find Cultural Differences in Text. Many of the descriptions include screenshots or video footage demonstrating the group's work, along with related publications.
Various conference papers and journal article are also posted in the Publications section of the website. The resources section provides links to websites describing the Open Mind and ConceptNet projects, which form the foundation of the group's work. US Agents raid p2p homes

US Agents raid p2p homes 08/27/2004 01:56 PM
US Attorney General John Ashcroft reported that US agents had raided the homes of 5 people suspected of illegally trading copyrighted material. Agents raided homes in Texas, Wisconsin and New York, and seized computers involved.

Ashcroft, viewed by many as a hard-line Attorney General, remarked that "P2P does not stand for 'permission to pilfer'". He also commented that the he believed that the DoJ shouldn't turn a blind eye whilst piracy on such a large scale was taking place.

The targets of the raids were users of popular file sharing program, Direct Connect. The 5 people were acting as hubs; hubs are the Kazaa equivalent of "super-nodes" - users sharing massive quantities of files. Ashcroft said that each of the 5 hubs had 40 petabytes of data in them (ed - this figure seems massively in-correct - and would more likely be 40 gigabytes - perhaps terabytes. The DC website claims to have only just reached 1 petabyte of data network-wide.).

The DoJ hopes to reduce the spread of illegal piracy by taking down these main hubs of copyrighted material distribution. Asides from a physical effect, these raids haev a large psychological effect on the p2p community, as the RIAA and the MPAA have learned to their advantage. Record labels and associations have initiated about 4000 lawsuits over the last 2 years, most of them being settled out of court for $5000.

Never trust gate agents...

Never trust gate agents... 01/26/2004 12:43 PM

I remember learning this lesson in the past. NEVER TRUST GATE AGENTS. My Lufthansa flight from Zurich to Munich was over an hour delayed. My transfer was very short and I thought I would miss my flight so I asked them to route me through Frankfurt. They told me all flights out of Munich were late and I would be OK. We arrived in Munich and we walked off the plane and were told to walk up an escalator going the wrong direction. Then at the top of the escalator, the door was locked and we had a pile-up. I heard cussing in a variety of languages. It was funny. We got out and all of the displays for connecting flights were blank.

I went to the gate, and of course the flight had left. I went to the service counter and I got the "are you stupid?" look and was told that I should take the next flight to Frankfurt.

Anyway, I better go board my next flight on my Lufthansa hub-a-thon...
