Aussie band Regurgitator ("the 'gurge") are planning to record their fifth full-length album locked inside a plastic bubble in the middle of Melbourne's Federation Square. The stunt is to be broadcast and webcast from August 31 to September 21. Hopefully it will be a return to form from the band who gave the world such classics as "I Sucked a Lot of Cock to Get Where I Am" and "Blubber Boy".

On September 24 2001, stock in Stewart Kaiser's start-up company R-Tec was selling for 46 cents a share. That day, Kaiser issued a press release about R-Tec's new device called C-BAND (Chemical & Biological Alarm and Neutralization Defense System.) Four days later, R-Tec shares had risen to $2.40 each and Kaiser sold the 50,000 shares he had just given to his mother. The funny thing is that C-BAND was actually nothing more than a filing cabinet painted yellow and outfitted with a flashing red light. Today, Kaiser and his wife were indicted for securities fraud, obstructing justice, and other bad things. Link

09/14/2004 03:48 AM
Xeni Jardin: During the "iPod Beemer" episode I did last week on the NPR show "Day to Day," I played a couple examples of the kinds of tunes you could rock out to in your iPodified BMW convertible -- one of them was "Early in the Morning," by legendary '80s R+B icons The Gap Band. During that episode, host Noah Adams inadvertently dissed the Gap Band. When he heard that segment air, my D2D colleague Brian Unger vowed to settle the score of funk: he challenged Mr. Adams to a duel, and here is the result. Listen to Brian's segment "Don't Diss The Gap Band" -- Link

Update: BoingBoing reader Mike Ransom of Tulsa Oklahoma says, "The GAP Band was named after three streets here in Tulsa: Greenwood, Archer and Pine. That's the same Greenwood and Archer mentioned in the archetypical Bob Wills Western Swing tune, "Take Me Back To Tulsa". Here's a further bit of trivia about one of those streets -- Link. The story above is done in the style of Paul Harvey, a Tulsa native. Here is a morph I did of Paul Harvey from his high school yearbook picture -- Link."

Maggot Band-Aid

Maggot Band-Aid 09/16/2004 09:29 AM
David Pescovitz: First used centuries ago to treat battlefield wounds, maggots are proving to be a useful treatment to prevent post-operative infections. Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) calls for maggot dressing to be applied to wounds twice a week for up to 72 hours each time. From the press release about a recent study on MDT in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases:
"Debridement, or the removal of contaminated tissue to expose healthy tissue, can be done surgically. However, maggots that have been disinfected during the egg stage so that they don’t carry bacteria into the wound have their advantages. The larvae preferentially consume dead tissue (steering clear of live), they excrete an antibacterial agent, and they stimulate wound healing--all factors that could be linked to the lower occurrence of infection in maggot-treated wounds."

FireWheel Rubber Band Gun

FireWheel Rubber Band Gun 12/19/2004 03:01 PM

firewheel.jpg imageIt's a shame I hadn't seen this Firewheel rubber band gun before now—entirely my fault, too, since apparently DansData reviewed it almost a week ago, yet I totally missed it. It's simple, cheap, and awesome, which is right up my alley. It's just a click-wheel rubber band gun, but the nautilus shell design allows you to pop off one of the ten loaded rubber bands at a time, hold it down for a full-auto burst, or just rock semi somewhere in between. It's an Australian design, but they've got an outlet here in the US, so there might just be a chance I can make some mothers unhappy with a few arms shipments to young boys. (Thanks, Matt!)

FCC Restructures Crucial Band

FCC Restructures Crucial Band 06/10/2004 05:50 PM
Steve Stroh says today's FCC reworking of the MMDS/ITFS band makes sense, but will be for naught: Read Daily Wireless's explanation of the move for details, but broadly, almost 200 MHz of sweet-spot spectrum in the 2.5 to 2.7 GHz range that's been carved up and relicensed in unpleasantly small and low-utility ways will be restructured for more utility and continuity. Stroh notes, however, that the FCC has opted out of the process by which the transition of existing users will take place. This means that the owners and users of the band have to figure it out. Stroh feels that currently deploying fixed broadband wireless companies have a huge advantage over those that were expecting to carve out new space in this band. Stroh also expects this entire band to go license-exempt within 10 years. Daily Wireless remarks that the 6 MHz sub-bands in the revision fits cellular 3G's needs. In the CDMA world, 1x = 1.25 MHz, as in 1xRTT and 1xEv-DO; 3x = 5 MHz. The service currently hosts a very small number of actually instructional television broadcasters, and they'll have new contiguous channels to use....

The FCC today proposed to allow unlicensed wireless devices to operate in the broadcast TV bands.  This is a big step forward, and one that was fiercely contested by incumbent broadcasters.  The FCC's proposal could open up significant new wireless capacity for broadband data services throughout the US.

The next step will be to file comments with the FCC in support of unlicensed operation in the bands.  The comment deadlines haven't yet been released, but are usually two to three months from when the proposal is issued.

On rock music, eurovision song contest
and weddings

You know, there's a serious credibility problem with a beautiful, scantily dressed woman, who sings happily "It hurts, how it hurts" (Sweden). I much prefer Finnish rock music, which mostly consists of serious men singing in a very laconic voice about they have been hurt and left in a thousand different ways. At least they mostly look and sound the part.

Which brings me to the general music selection of Finnish weddings. It is supposed to be a happy occasion, but yet somehow most of the music is always extremely depressing. It just makes you want to scream: the three required waltzes, and then a selection of other classics, and then moving towards traditional Finnish rock music, in which a lone, drunken man sings his lament after killing his family, right before blowing his own brains out.

Hel-lo? Happy, anyone? Remember? The state where you don't really want to kill yourself (or anyone else for that matter)?

*sigh*

I guess you would need to listen to a lot of Finnish rock music to understand this entry. Hell, even writing about the music depresses me to another dimension. Then again, being alone in a small hotel room, watching the Eurovision Song Contest (which is complete crap, as usual), feeling the blissful state of inebriation ebb away into tiredness and depression ("laskuhumala" in Finnish, a highly descriptive word, I might add) after having left the party prematurely because of the compound effect of alcohol, little sleep, the afore mentioned music, relatives ("Now when are you going to get married, mmh?"), and the general happiness of everyone else (happily married or at least engaged)... What do you expect? ;-)

Anyway. Lots of luck and love to the happy couple.

Time To Drop Song Download Costs

Time To Drop Song Download Costs 09/20/2004 03:07 PM
We've been waiting patiently for the inevitable price war to break out in the online music download store world, but so far it's (mostly) held up due to the high fees the recording industry continues to charge. Now, Newsweek's tech columnist Steven Levy, is pointing out that if the recording industry dropped their fees, they'd sell a lot more music. He thinks that sooner or later, the industry has to realize that they'll do even better if prices are cheaper. He points to Real Networks' experience (which is a bit skewed since it was a promotional plan) in dropping the price by half -- but which allowed them to sell six times as many songs. If this ratio were to hold (a big "if" obviously, since it assumes people will spend more overall) then the industry would end up making a lot more money by cutting their price -- but, instead, of course, they're all looking for ways to raise prices or force people to buy bad songs to get good songs.

The Song Remains the Same 08/20/2004 12:17 PM
In an August memo typed from his hospital bed, Steve Jobs -- Apple's chief executive, patriarch and media impresario--let his employees know he would be out for a month to recover from surgery to remove a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Patients with this type of cancer, called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, have a 90% survival rate, especially if treated early. Apple says Jobs is due back in September.

A Jobs-less Apple is tough to imagine. The Monday after the memo was made public, shares fell 2%, the Nasdaq was flat. With his silver beard, round specs and trademark black mock turtleneck, Jobs personifies Apple and its brand:hip, independent and gleefully geeky. He drives its design and marketing prowess and is chief credit-taker for the iPod's wild success. (Name another product to hit $1 billion in three years.)

"Apple is nothing without him," says Jobs cohort and Frog Design founder Hartmut Esslinger.

The board of directors says a secret succession plan is in place should Jobs ever be unable to run Apple. "We're not avoiding the subject. Succession is clearly part of our ongoing discussions," says Apple director Millard (Mickey)Drexler, also chairman of J. Crew.

I eschew reality TV in most all forms, but that kind of ended last year when I happened to catch the first episode of American Idol and I've watched every episode since. Most of it is pap and watching a show requires fast forwarding through almost all of it, but once in a while you get some magic moments. Here's Fantasia's song from last night's show (which I got from Caroline's site). It was easily the best performance of the last two seasons. It wasn't just singing it right, the way she presented it onstage made it look like it was ripped from a Broadway show. This is what you get when you totally commit to doing something creative, it's freaking amazing.
