Jabra BT800 Bluetooth Headset Reviewed
(Verdict: Lots of Features, Lots of
Bulk)
04/05/2005 09:18 AM

bt800_rev.jpgFor the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge, which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though, Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.

Mayberry Whistles New Tune

Mayberry Whistles New Tune 11/11/2003 11:22 PM
Mayberry has moved on from the 60s: The town the creators of the Andy Griffith Show modeled Mayberry after now has a Wi-Fi network covering 18 blocks of downtown. Apparently the city, Mount Airy, North Carolina, has been hit by the disappearance of many of the manufacturing jobs that kept its citizens busy. It's not totally clear why town leaders think the free Wi-Fi network will help out the area. It seems that some believe the network will attract entrepreneurs to live in the area. They also hope the network will attract people to downtown, where they may end up spending money in the shops. The network is cheap enough so it's worth a shot--the town estimates it spent $5,000 setting it up and $300 to $500 per month to maintain it....

Acer Offers Free Wireless for K-12 Education

Acer America Corp. has announced the 'Wi-Fi 101' initiative, which will provide free wireless access points and installation to select K-12 schools nationwide. With the support of Intel Corp., Acer America will canvas and select one school in each qualified school district for Wi-Fi 101, with up to 120 schools participating nationwide for the program. Each designated school will be eligible for the installation of up to four access points in two different locations at no cost to the school or the school district.

Wireless connectivity can enable K-12 environments to enjoy the advantages of technology such as Internet access without incurring the more expensive infrastructure costs often associated with hard-wiring. Wireless technology also accelerates the availability of advanced networking in environments where hard-wiring is not a viable option. The intent of Acer is to be in the forefront of providers to education environments, offering solutions that will help speed the penetration of technology into education.

The installation of the wireless access points requires no funding or manpower contribution on the part of schools or district personnel. Interested schools are invited to contact Acer at www.acer.com/wifi101, or their local Acer reseller for details on applying for the program. Upon approval, Acer America will arrange for a site inspection of existing network connections. Up to two wireless sites employing four access points will be installed at each participating school, with the library, cafeteria or computer laboratory being the obvious choices for their Wi-Fi hotspots.

For more information about Wi-Fi 101, visit www.acer.com/wifi101.

Sapir/Whorf raises its head again in study of the Piraha tribe. I can't stop thinking about this article which appeared in the Globe and Mail Friday.

A study appearing today in the journal Science reports that the hunter-gatherers seem to be the only group of humans known to have no concept of numbering and counting. Not only that, but adult Piraha apparently can't learn to count or understand the concept of numbers or numerals, even when they asked anthropologists to teach them and have been given basic math lessons for months at a time ... the Piraha are the only people known to have no distinct words for colours.
They have no written language, and no collective memory going back more than two generations. They don't sleep for more than two hours at a time during the night or day. Even when food is available, they frequently starve themselves and their children, Prof. Everett reports.
They communicate almost as much by singing, whistling and humming as by normal speech.
They frequently change their names, because they believe spirits regularly take them over and intrinsically change who they are.
They have no creation myths, tell no fictional stories and have no art.

Can any of our anthropologists or linguists comment? I had thought that narrative was the common link in all human cultures....
