Similar to macros but more powerful, add-ins allow you to extend the built-in functionality of Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003. You can create COM add-ins in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 or Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0, or you can create managed add-ins in any of the languages that use the Microsoft .NET Framework, such as Microsoft Visual Basic .NET or Microsoft Visual C# .NET. When you create managed add-ins for FrontPage2003, you can use the tools, classes, and programming languages that are part of the Microsoft .NET Framework. The MSDN article "Creating Managed FrontPage Add-ins in C#" (see the Related Resources box on this page) shows you how to create a managed add-in for FrontPage in C# and assumes a general knowledge of the .NET Framework and a functional knowledge of the C# programming language. The article also explains what you need to know to create your own managed add-ins for FrontPage and provides extensive resources for more information.

Ssssh -- don't tell anyone, especially Microsoft enterprise salesmen, but COM can now be enjoyed by Mac OS X programmers. I am being quiet about it because obviously, Apple does not want anyone to know. Mac OS X has been able to do COM for quite some time. The thing is, no one has really broadcast this -- until now. You can write COM components that have the potential to run on both Windows and Mac OS X with no code changes.

Town of Bourton's miniature model has a
miniature model of the model (and so on)
12/23/2003 11:30 PM
Mark Bourne says: So my wife Elizabeth and I are googling up possibilities for our long trip to England next year. Checking out London sites and so on. An acquaintance suggested staying for a few days in the Cotswolds, a scenic Middle Earthy region west of London. That's how we found a page about the town of Bourton.

You just gotta love this text, which blends Ye Olde Scepter'd Isle with sci-fi gee-wizardry:

You will probably have noticed that when you take a branch from certain trees (some conifers for example), the branch looks like a miniature version of the tree, and when you break a piece off the branch, that looks like a tree too. Mathematicians call this property self-similarity.

Bourton has a wonderful example of self-similarity: it contains a 1/10 scale model of itself. Because the 1/10 scale model is a complete model of the town, it must contain a model of itself, and it does, a 1/100th. scale model of Bourton, and because the 1/100th. scale model is also a complete model of Bourton, it must also contain a 1/1000th. scale model of the scale model of the scale model of Bourton.

And it does. It is only a matter of time before a team of nano-technicians turn up in the town to etch a sub-micron scale model of Bourton on a silicon wafer, complete with mill, waterwheel, and a highly imaginative interpretation of the River Windrush as a stream of electrons.

F rontpage Code Cleaner: Here's a handy service, though FrontPage 2003 is a lot better with code than its predecessors.

Our Frontpage Code Cleaner will read the page you specify, and clean a lot of the un-needed code created by Microsoft Frontpage. This helps to shrink the size of the actual page, which has many benefits.

Just for fun, I fed Gadgetopia's front page into it, and it dropped it from 70K (yikes) to 66KB.

Funny you should b ring up Vermeer Technologies. While trying to beat a Visual Studio web project into working yesterday, I did a little network sniffing to find out what FrontPage and Visual Studio actually do to make things work. I'd always thought it was WebDAV that made them go, but in fact, VTI created their own protocol before WebDAV came on the scene. Read on to find out more than you ever cared to know about FrontPage Server Extensions (This entry is categorized as Total Geek — you've been warned).
