MetaBrainz goes 501(c)3 and announces
board
04/19/2005 03:56 AM
The
MetaBrainz Foundation is a 501.(c).3 tax-exempt non-profit based in
San Luis Obispo, California that operates the MusicBrainz project.
MusicBrainz is a user maintained community music metadatabase.
Music metadata is information such as the name of an artist, the name
of an album and list of tracks that appear on an album. MusicBrainz
collects this information about music and makes it available to the
public.
With the creation of the MetaBrainz Foundation, the MusicBrainz
project enters its second phase of life. In the first incarnation, the
project was privately maintained and focused primarily on basic music
metadata described above. Today the MusicBrainz project has the legal
backing and infrastructure of the MetaBrainz Foundation, which will
allow it to embark on a mission to expand its scope.
This
is a very important project because, unlike CDDB,
MetaBrainz is protecting
the data from capture by corporate interests and if successful, will
allow us to make information about music interoperable and the data
will provide a foundation for this interoperability. This will allow
people to share playlists across languages, meta-search on music
across services, etc. I have joined the board together with Dan
Brickley, Cory Doctorow, Lawrence Lessig and founder
Robert Kaye. They
are doing a
fundraiser
and we'd be happy for your support. Congratulations Robert.

MetaBrainz launches to fund and oversee
MusicBrainz
04/19/2005 03:38 AMCory Doctorow:
Today marks the launch of MetaBrainz, a nonprofit 501(c)3 on whose
Board of Directors I proudly serve, along with Joi Ito, Larry Lessig
and Dan Brickley. MetaBrainz will oversee and fund the work of
MusicBrainz, an audio fingerprinting service that can fill in all the
MP3s and Oggs in your music library by listening to them and figuring
out what they are -- this means that if you make a music player, you
can opt to use MusicBrainz instead of kissing ass at Gracenote, the
for-profit entity that took all the info that music-listeners typed in
to make the CDDB and closed it off and started charging monopoly rents
on.
Recently, the MusicBrainz project released its much-anticipated
Advanced Relationships feature that allows users to contribute
detailed information about musical works and artists. These expanded
capabilities can capture all of the credits that are typically printed
in the liner notes of an audio CD, as well as data found in
comprehensive musical biographies or discographies:
"With Advanced Relationships, MusicBrainz expands its data coverage
beyond basic metadata and sets its sights on becoming a user
contributed music encyclopedia. The project can now capture more
information ranging from common knowledge to obscure facts about
music. We are finally ready to incorporate the detailed information
that users have been clamoring to contribute." said Robert Kaye, the
Executive Director of the MetaBrainz Foundation.

12/22/2003 02:05 AMBetween viruses, security patches, crashes and other frustrations with

“Following the discovery that several major financial
institutions’ Web sites were being used to spread an Internet
Explorer exploit, The Register ran the story, “CERT recommends
anything but IE.” CERT’s point is that enterprises and
individual users can reduce their risk exposure by using browsers that
aren’t as susceptible to Web-based exploits. So, why are we
giving malware writers easy targets? Why aren’t we switching to
more secure browsers? When Robert Morris released his famous…

Reuters catches up with the homebrew PVR revolution with today's
article "Step aside TiVo, here comes Freevo." It's a new
overview of the home PC-based options, including Freevo, MythTV,
Snapstream's BeyondTV, and Microsoft's Media Center. It also mentions
the the Build Your Own PVR
website.
Personally, although I've heard good things about MythTV and
Freevo, unless you're fairly familiar with building your own PCs from
scratch and running command-line tools, Snapstream's BeyondTV is the
easiest way to dip your toe into the homebrew PVR pool. Microsoft's
version is a non-option, as it can only be legally obtained when
buying a new home theater PC, which typically runs $1200-1600. [PVRblog]
