AdBusters sues for right to air anti-ads

AdBusters sues for right to air anti-ads 09/16/2004 01:40 AM
Cory Doctorow: AdBusters is suing Canadian broadcasters for refusing to air their anti-ad ads.
Activists concerned with almost every social issue -- from the environment, worker rights, electoral politics . . . you name it – have had their messages rejected by media corporations. If you walked into your local television station today and tried to buy 30-seconds of airtime, you would likely get the same response we continually get. Boiled down, the refrain goes something like this: We will not accept your money. We will not accept your messages. We're in the business to sell ads, not spread your ideas.

    Linux cannot compete with Longhorn

Linux cannot compete with Longhorn 09/08/2004 03:37 AM
Wait. Hear me out. I'm not saying that because Longhorn is a superior platform in any way. I'm saying it because Longhorn is not real, it's just the latest codename for the next version of Windows. As everyone knows, the next version of Windows is always the best operating system of all time: it's always faster, more stable, and more secure than anything the world has ever seen before. Comparing a real operating system like GNU/Linux against the marketing dreams of the malignant monopoly from Redmond is like comparing your geekiness with Helen, Sweetheart of the Internet: a futile and unfulfilling exercise.

How Linux And The Mac Can Compete
    Against Windows "Longhorn"
    11/17/2003 12:48 PM
With the recent release of the initial Longhorn bits, we now need to start thinking about the competitive landscape for 2005, which is when the next version of Windows is likely to ship. To understand the future, we need to first look at the past, at the launch of Windows 95 and how IBM OS/2 and Apple Computer failed to compete against Microsoft. I was the lead Dataquest analyst on the Windows 95 launch, and Longhorn is beginning to look like a similar series of events with many of the same players in the game.

How can free software compete with
    commercial developers?
    11/05/2003 10:55 AM
The amazing thing about the free vs. proprietary software race is that free software is in it at all. With all the resources larger proprietary software companies have at their command, you'd think their products would be unfailingly easy to use, virtually bug-free, and priced so low that no one would mind paying for them. But this is not the case. Why isn't it? You'd think a software company full of carefully-selected programmers, project leaders, market researchers, quality control personnel, professional documentation writers, and a technical support staff would have no trouble beating any open source project -- with both hands tied behind its corporate back -- even if it gave the open source project a 3 km lead in a 5 km race.
