12/18/2003 03:27 AM A few weeks ago, on the way back from India, Rasmus let me use his
noise cancelling headphones for an hour or so on one of the flights.
Even though I understand the science behind how they worked (it's
really not that complicated), I'd always doubted how effective they
could really be. I was happily impressed. The headphones worked
surprisingly well. I'd say the blocked out a good 70% of the
consistent background noise, namely the engines. And that...

04/26/2004 10:07 AMClaire Chanel, the person behind the Jay-Z Construction Set, has
decided to net.judo-ify the RIAA's spoof tracks, random noise
disguised as top-40 singles which it promulgates on the P2P netowrks.
As a follow-up to our last project, the Jay-Z Construction Set, Scary
Sherman and I decided to take a fair & balanced route by
highlighting one of the positive moves made recently by music industry
leaders.
The RIAA-Mix Vol.1 is a compilation of the hottest underground remixes
of top40 hit tracks produced by the upcoming talent at Overpeer.
These homages to 20th century noise artists and avant composers pull a
frightening bait and switch on listeners veering wildly from
recognizable pop hooks to jarring digital distortion.
Available at riaamix.com as downloadable mp3s, streaming flash audio,
or on a compact disc, we're hoping our compilation can help support
the arrival of challenging new music to mainstream exposure.

Napster: From Trading Music To Trading
on the Stock Exchange
Napster: From Trading Music To Trading
on the Stock Exchange
09/19/2004 09:28 AMLike a phoenix from the ashes, Napster has come back not once, but
twice it seems. Since Roxio bought the Napster name and logo a couple
years ago at a bankruptcy auction, Napster received a new "lease
on life". This time around Napster isn't just a service, it's to
become a public company and will be traded on the stock exchange.
Roxio has recently sold off it's CD-burning software business in a
move to concentrate solely on selling music online. Using Napster as
it's company name, it will allow Roxio to compete with other online
music delivery services from the likes of Microsoft, Yahoo!, and
Apple.
Roxio's sale of its software business landed them a cool $80 million
in cash and stocks which will give Napster a cash base of more than
$100 million once the deal closes, expected by year's end.
"One of the most important questions for our investors is, 'Does
Napster have the staying power to stay and thrive?' Having the cash
answers that question," said Chris Gorog, chief executive and
chairman of Roxio.
It will be more than enough to cover Napster until it becomes
profitable, Gorog said, "and we're on a clear path to do
that."

Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
02/01/2005 08:35 PM
Continuing my series on mobile platforms, I now think killer mobile
apps need mobile
devices designed like game consoles, meaning that it has one
or two slots
for application cartridges. Each cartridge contains one or
more applications.
Cellphones would come with a built-in cartridge containing the
phone app as well as
others.
Adding a cartridge adds new apps. Applications have two
modes: running and stopped.
The Next-App
button (aka
Appy button) activates (brings to front) each running apps in
turn. Some apps
can activate itself when an event fires (phone call
received). To see the list
of available apps, keep the Next-App button pressed for a second.
Eventually, app cartridges will be advance to become platform
cartridges, taking over
the full functionality of the mobile device to offer better
application platform services
than the one that came with the device (i.e. easy to use app
download service that auto-configures
apps for your device). If you don't like the built-in
calender, just stop it
and run a third-party calendar instead.

Jabra BT800 Bluetooth Headset Reviewed
(Verdict: Lots of Features, Lots of
Bulk)
04/05/2005 09:18 AM
For
the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair
with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a
lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra
BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that
problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does
feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge,
which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech
convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though,
Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent
noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.

Plantronics is releasing a new Bluetooth headset,
code-named 'Tahiti,' which is designed to be both fashionable and
convenient. The 'fashionable' part remains to be seen (it looks a bit
twigs and berries, to me), but the convenience is clear: inside the
foam carrying case (with included vanity mirror), are three different
ways to charge the Tahiti, including adapter plugs for mobile phone
chargers and a AAA battery adapter.
Expect a production model out by summer.

Review
06/23/2004 10:52 AM
Considering the Bluetake
BT400 GII Bluetooth headset? Even though it looks like a cast-off
Romulan scout ship? That you have to put on your head? You probably
better read this review at WhiningDog first. No offense to WhiningDog,
but these Bluetooth headset reviews are only so much good without a
comparison -- you can learn a lot about the features, but not so much
about the relative sound quality. Still, they seem happy enough with
it but when they complain about things about how it fits all you're
really learning about, as a rule, is the shape of the reviewer's ears.
When is someone going to start making a Bluetooth headset with a
molded ear piece?
