Online Banking

Online Banking 03/24/2005 08:10 PM

A quick read discussing public perception in the world of online banking:

The updated report from the Better Business Bureau study shows that fear has unrealistically worsened. "Our numbers show that fears about online identity fraud may be out of proportion to the relative risk, causing consumers to ignore the most glaring issues," Javelin's founder and chief analyst, James Van Dyke, said.

Despite the rising perception among consumers that online transactions are very risky, this latest study shows results to the contrary. It concludes that identity fraud problems are not worsening. In fact, the total number of victims is declining.

I'm not sure I believe this last bit, though:

The average time to resolve an identity fraud crime dropped by 15 percent from 33 hours in 2003 to 28 hours in 2004.

A year or two ago, my friend's debit card was compromised. Later, he found out that he'd purchased a bunch of stuff from Digital Blasphemy. That took several weeks to clear up! (I think the red tape at his bank was responsible for the length of time involved, though.)

Personally, I have no problem logging into my accounts online. I've even convinced my parents that its safe to do so -- no easy task.

Should You Skip Out On Internet Banking?

Should You Skip Out On Internet Banking? 03/08/2004 11:04 PM
A security researcher is now claiming that everyone should avoid online banking because "it's no longer safe". The "no longer" part is a bit misleading, as he also says a home computer was "never" designed to be safe enough for online banking. The response, though, from a bankers' association (obviously a bit biased) seems to make a lot more sense. They point out that nothing online is completely secure, but that if users take the proper precautions they should be pretty safe. The proper response, then, is that these banks should do as much of that work as possible in getting their users up to speed on safer surfing techniques. However, to completely write-off online banking seems a bit excessive. Improving security should definitely be a priority, but that doesn't mean that the current solution doesn't work for now.

AIM account restored

AIM account restored 12/19/2004 03:06 PM

Ryan Naraine at eWeek who has been covering the AOL Instant Messenger account suspension SNAFU just contacted me to ask if my account had been restored. Apparently he was talking to AOL and they had said that the accounts had been restored. I checked and I still got the "Your screen name has been suspended and cannot be used to log in" error. Ryan contacted AOL and they fixed my account somehow. AOL didn't explain exactly why I was suspended and how I was cleared, but it appears that for now my account is back. Thanks Ryan. Is anyone else still having trouble? I assume that since I had to have them fix me manually, that there are probably others who haven't been restored. Or maybe they thought I was under 13 or something.

If You Really Want a GMail Account... 05/05/2004 09:36 AM

Gmail accounts go up for bid: I suppose there would be some cache value in having "bob@gmail.com" for an address.

Beta testers invited by Google to take part in its new free e-mail service also received invitations to give to another person, but many are being auctioned on eBay, so far fetching bids as high as $61. [...]

Currently, 42 testers have listed their invitations on eBay, with one offering to sell an additional invitation outright — for a mere $199.
