Activity Based Computing from Disney

Activity Based Computing from Disney 09/05/2004 01:21 PM

Once we're done bringing digital lifestyle aggregation to the masses - the NEXT big thing will be activity based computing.

Inspired by Don Norman - this notion was explored at Apple's ATG labs in the early 90's - but never released. Clay Shirky calls it 'situated software'. Jason Fried calls it "small and beautiful" software.

So here comes Disney with their own interpretation of the concept. It's called Magical Gatherings.

Most Popular Online Activity: Figuring

Most Popular Online Activity: Figuring
Out A Way To Go Somewhere Else
08/11/2004 01:37 PM
For all that fear that the internet was causing people to spend less time actually seeing other people, it turns out that the number one activity online appears to involve figuring out a way for someone to get out of their home to go somewhere else. According to the latest study from the folks at the Pew Internet and American Life Project, the number one activity online is finding maps (this is based on the percentage of people who use the internet for this activity, and not how often this is being done, of course). Coming in at second is communicating with others. In other words, it appears that there are people out there who only use the internet for finding maps, but who never actually send out any email or do any other form of internet-based communication. The study also notes that many of the online map users have now learned that it no longer makes sense to ask for directions offline.

Glacial Activity Revealed on Mars

Glacial Activity Revealed on Mars 03/22/2005 04:23 PM

Two craters on Mars proves that there were glaciers in the past on the Red Planet. The craters touch and show a flow line from one, the upper one, downhill into the lower crater. According to the New Scientist Glacier Flow

The impact craters lie near a mountain and scientists suspect a glacier accumulated at the base at some time in the past. If so, ice first flowed into the upper, smaller crater, which measures about 9 kilometres across. The glacier then continued its flow downhill into the lower crater, which is about 17 km in diameter. Stripes in the craters probably indicate the direction of glacial flow from one crater to another. "There are many features similar to this on Mars, though this is most certainly one of the largest and most dramatic," says John Mustard, a geologist at Brown University, Rhode Island, US.
