Want Your Own Web Controlled Satellite?

Want Your Own Web Controlled Satellite? 11/19/2003 04:36 PM
We've had plenty of articles about the idea of "space tourism" and how many think it has huge potential, but there's still a long way to go before that becomes reasonable for more than just a very small number of people. However, one company, SpaceDev is looking at a middle step between what we've got now and real space tourism. They're using eBay to offer you your very own chance to own a web-controlled satellite. That's right. For just a few spare million dollars you have lying around, you can own a mostly useless satellite. But, you can show off to your friends by logging into it via a web browser and pointing it at their homes. That's gotta be worth the money. The company is also pitching it to people who then want to resell control time on their satellites. Certainly seems like a long shot, but you should never underestimate the desires of people with large egos and even larger wallets.

MCI Offers Satellite Broadband 02/11/2004 05:39 PM
MCI introduces new service, MCI Internet Broadband Satellite Corporate, for 128 Kbps to 1 Mbps of satellite bandwidth: A railroad, CSX, already plans to use the service at 200 locations which are too remote for terrestrial networks to be affordable. The service will be priced at from around $200 to $500 per month, comparable to wired line pricing. The article notes that MCI could only previously deliver 128 Kbps via its satellite network. The service apparently offers symmetrical bandwidth and can support VPNs....

Personal Satellite Assistant

Personal Satellite Assistant 06/10/2004 01:00 PM

psa_bot.jpgDefenseTech's Noah Shachtman has a short write-up about this cute little device that wraps up half-a-century's worth of science-fiction ideas into one floating red jet-powered sphere. Called the 'Personal Satellite Assistant,' the goal of the program is to provide an intelligent assistant to the astronauts who need both hands free to perform experiments (by the way, still haven't seen the results of those sex in space tests, NASA) and to monitor conditions about the space craft and warn if anything goes awry. It even can move around by blasting jets of air -- plenty of power to bop around in weightlessness. There's no promise the PSA will ever hit the deep blacks skies, but if we can't have zero-G orgy videos, the least NASA could do is let our space stations have pets.

Interesting story in The Star (Canada) about this weekend's launch of Telesat Canada's new Internet broadcast satellite:
Canadians should care about this moment -- about this particular satellite. Anik F2 is more than just the largest and heaviest of commercial satellites in the world, it's also the first to combine cutting edge Ka-band technology with older and less powerful Ku- and C-band transponders. The latter two will continue to carry Canada's television and telecommunications signals, but the powerful Ka-band "spot beams" will, for the first time, let an Anik satellite deliver two-way, broadband Internet service to any location in North America at a price that's competitive with residential cable or DSL high-speed services.

Helicopter to Catch Satellite 08/20/2004 08:42 AM

NASA prepares to catch a falling star sample: This is awesome. It's rare that the world of geeks and the world of action movie stars collides so enjoyably.

To increase understanding of the sun's composition, NASA in 2001 launched the $264 million Genesis mission to collect samples from the solar wind — electrically charged particles blown out from the sun at up to 2 million mph. [...]

To prevent contamination and damage to the fragile silicon wafers that collected the star dust should the Genesis capsule hit the ground, NASA will try to snare the capsule in midair as it descends.
