iTunes Rolls the Odometer

iTunes Rolls the Odometer 07/12/2004 11:07 AM

Apple has sold its 100 millionth song from the iTunes Store.

Kevin Britten of Hays, Kansas downloaded Somersault (Dangermouse remix) by Zero7; the 100 millionth song purchased from the iTunes music store. He will receive a 17-inch PowerBook, a 40GB iPod, and a gift certificate for 10,000 iTunes songs to create the ultimate music library for his new iPod.

In addition we awarded 50 special 20GB iPods — one to the purchaser of each 100,000th song downloaded between 95 million and 100 million songs.

Between the ease of use and the reasonable pricing, it's no wonder iTunes is able to sell so many songs. As long as Apple can keep the record labels from messing with the pricing, they should be able to keep a good thing going.

Wikipedia Rolls the Odometer

Wikipedia Rolls the Odometer 07/07/2004 09:39 AM

Wikipedia celebrates 300,000 entries today, and that's just in English.

There are 717716 total pages in the database. This includes "talk" pages, pages about Wikipedia, minimal "stub" pages, redirects, and others that probably don't qualify as articles. Excluding those, there are 300241 pages that are probably legitimate articles. There have been a total of 4992922 page edits since the software was upgraded (July 20, 2002). That comes to 6.96 average edits per page.

I doubt that since the web was born, there has ever been an effort that has added more value to it than Wikipedia. As a growing repository that's attempting to capture all human knowledge, it's a pretty amazing resource. If you're looking for a project to support financially or with your development efforts, Wikipedia is certainly a worthy endeavour.
