Making The Rounds

Making The Rounds

Making The Rounds 03/16/2003 07:20 AM

There's a new Star Wars commercial making the rounds, this one includes several of Hasbro's latest '03 toys that have just now begun to hit retail. Among the highlights are Anakin and Dooku Speederbikes, Flying R2, and Mace Windu (Total Control). If you collect television spots, this will be one to watch for. I've seen it a couple times now, if you stay tuned (or tooned) to Nickelodeon and/or Cartoon Network, you shouldn't have trouble picking it up. Thanks to Garah for the heads up.

flipped flagThis photo was emailed to me along with a ton of forwarding headers and a bunch of people in the CC: field. (click on the photo to see a full-sized version). Here's the text that came with it:
Nothing like the US soldier's sense of  humor...and well aimed!
Hooray for our troops.
READ THE BLACK PATCH UNDER THE US FLAG;
This SHOULD be on the front cover of Time, Newsweek, etc.
But it won't.
Let's you and I "put it there" by forwarding this all around the world (so
to speak)!
(The flags are France, Germany, and Russia)-- in case you don't know..
It's easy to tell that the black patch and the three flags below it have been added after the photo was taken. They are almost hovering off the fabric of the uniform. But the big giveaway is the US flag. Isn't it facing the wrong way? The stars are usually on the left. This is a mirror image. I'm guessing this picture was horizontally flipped before someone added the black patch and the other country's flags. I should have checked snopes before posting this. The photo is fake. I was wrong about the flag, though. The patch really looks like that. According to snopes, it's to give the appearing that the flag is flying in a breeze blowing towards the front of the soldier. (Thanks Cody!)

Greenberg also runs through options for paying (or not paying) for service at hotels, coffeeshops, and other venues....

Startups Still Having Trouble Raising
Early Rounds?

Startups Still Having Trouble Raising
Early Rounds?
09/13/2004 05:19 AM
Here in Silicon Valley there's been a noticeable buzz among both startups and VCs that the funding gates have opened again and, while it may not be easy to get money, there is money to be had. However, a study now claims that ve ry little venture cash is going into early stage startups, with most of it going to later stage deals. This has been a general trend in VC over the last few years anyway, as the earlier stages are often funded more with angel funds or smaller VC firms that focus almost exclusively on early stages. Of course, it also depends on how you define "early stage." What used to be called "friends and family" or "seed" rounds are often called A rounds to make them seem more important. Also, the biggest reason why this study may not sound right is that it's already out of date. The data seems to be from 2003. It's not entirely clear why it's taken nearly a year to compile this data, but it wouldn't be at all surprising to find the trend heading back in the other direction in 2004.

Making OS X useful

Making OS X useful 03/13/2003 10:22 AM

This article on taming the dock looks like the solution to my frustration with OS X. I arrange my dock in much the same way shown here, with my favorite apps on one side, and the running apps on the other (though, still on the default dock), but I'm constantly hitting the wrong icon when the dock ballons up on mouseover, and I can never remember where exactly I need to point to launch an app.

I'm giving this a go and seeing how it works out. Funny how it looks a little bit like the windows start bar, isn't it?

Making IM Even More Useful

Making IM Even More Useful 02/19/2004 01:27 AM
IM in the Corporate World

"Today, IBM's IM users average about 3 million messages per day, up from 2.5 million messages per day in 2002. The company has also seen a 4 percent reduction in telephone use, and a reduction in the load on its e-mail servers.

IBM employees communicate primarily with each other, but can also communicate with certain applications. For example, Reuss-Caton says there are several apps, including a dictionary and the corporate directory, to which users can send IM queries and receive responses. For example, if Reuss-Caton queries the database with an employee name, it would return all the employee's details, including presence awareness information telling her whether that individual is online." "The general outlines of how genes build the brain are finally becoming clear, and we are also starting to see how, in forming the brain, genes make room for the environment’s essential role.
