Spinach Solar Power

Spinach Solar Power 06/29/2004 03:53 PM

spinach_180.jpg imageIf Marc Baldo has his way, we might be using spinach to power our future gadgets. He and other at MIT have developed a process that isolates photosynthetic proteins from spinach and puts them between two layers of conducting material, causing a small electric current to be generated when light was shone on it -- the same proteins that form the chloroplasts inside the plant's leaves, which convert light into energy via photosynthesis. The biological solar cells aren't perfect, as they give up the ghost after around 21 days. Surprisingly, though, they're already hitting a 12 percent efficiency of conversion -- that's as good as many conventional solar cells today.

I predict the biological stability of the spinach cells will increase when married to a fixed solution of olive oil.

A Spinach-Powered Laptop?

A Spinach-Powered Laptop? 06/29/2004 04:05 AM
Roland Piquepaille writes "In "Could laptops run on spinach?," Nature reports that researchers from the MIT have made solar cells powered by spinach proteins. These prototype solar cells which transform light into 'green' energy could be used one day to coat and power your laptop. There is still work to be done before becoming a commercial product. Right now, the prototype delivers current for only three weeks. And they are not very efficient, converting only 12% of the light they absorb into electricity. However, these spinach-powered solar cells are better for our environment than silicon solar cells. And according to Science News Online, in "Protein Power: Solar cell produces electricity from spinach and bacterial proteins," they also have the potential to be self-repairing. You'll find more excerpts on my blog." Anyone else think this sounds ridiculously over-simplified? Thinking about how much energy would be needed to run a laptop would suggest that spinach farming would have to become mighty popular, and you may need to coat your house in spinach if you wanted to actually use it to power a computer.

I'll go along with the thought that most of today's nefarious hackers (and they have brought into ill repute what was once a term of respect) are lazy. But I think they're too lazy even to do a spot of reverse-engineering. All they need to do is to read the Microsoft Knowledgebase article detailing the extent and cause of the vulnerability to help them create an exploit by adapting someone else's real hacking work.

You've probably read about the HIV scare in the porn business. The San Francisco Chronicle suggests that the adult-entertainment industry look to lessons learned in San Francisco during the 1980s. And an industry-news site (note: this site may not be work-safe) takes an even sterner approach, urging a massive database tracking just about everything an individual actor may have done.

The Japanese "sort of equivalent" of SuicideGirls is Cure, a cosplay sight. The biggest difference is that the sexy pictures are not allowed. It's quite an amazing community. There are 5000 layers (comes from Cosplayers) and 30,000 cameko (comes from camera kozo or "Camera Boys"). The layers can be sorted by ranking or by the characters they play. The cameko are otaku who spend their lives taking pictures of the layers and giving beautiful prints of their photos to the layers and sharing them online. The site lets you send these photos to or view them on your mobile phones.
