Griffin Technology Inc. on Thursday announced the release of their AirClick Remote for iPod and iPod mini, a remote control designed, as you might have guessed, to work with Apple's iPod and iPod mini. The AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60 feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

Remote Control Jammer

Remote Control Jammer 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

remote_jammer.jpg imageIt's dirty, tactically, but if you live in a household where control of the remote has escalated into a full-blown peacekeeping operation, this Remote Control Jammer from GirlsStuff UK is cheap enough (at around $8) to buy multiple units to sprinkle like land mines around the smoking battlefield of your living room or den. (Also useful: actual land mines.) It works on regular IR frequencies used by most common remotes, although they don't make any promises it will work in the US. (Thanks, Graeme!)

back to our regular geek'o'rama: Paul Mison noticed that iTunes 4.7 is advertising a _dacp._tcp service. It looks like they are preparing to support a remote control type thing. Ed Despard is guessing it's a "digital audio control protocol.". (This is from the daap-dev mailinglist, which doesn't have a proper archive -- daap-dev-subscribe at develooper.com to subscribe) In related completely inconsequential news I've had great success using the rating feature in iTunes and with the iPod mini. Whistle Remote Control Fob

Whistle Remote Control Fob 02/05/2005 10:16 PM

tag-for-remote.jpg imageWhy this is necessary I have no idea, but it appears this device hooks up to one's remote, allowing you to whistle codes into it, which are then translated into an infrared signal that then controls your television (or whatever). Or maybe it calls down a magical bird that pecks at the buttons with its beak, I don't know. Does it really matter? You'll look like a knob using this no matter how it works.
