08/27/2004 02:02 PM
Casio Computer Co. Ltd. has taken the wraps off five new digital still cameras it will begin selling worldwide in the run-up to this year's end-of-year sales season. The models include a slimmer version of its flagship Exilim camera that is the first to use a recently developed transparent ceramic lens. The Tokyo company first launched its Exilim range in 2002 and the credit-card-sized cameras soon began to steal market share from competitors. Canon Inc., Pentax Corp., Sony Corp. and others soon launched their own models into the small-size sector and this area now leads the digital camera market. For the first week of August, small-size models from Casio, Canon and Sony held the top four positions on a domestic sales ranking of all digital still cameras in Japan compiled by GfK Marketing Services Japan Ltd.

NavMan PiN in Stores

NavMan PiN in Stores 06/30/2004 08:00 AM

navman_pin.jpg imageThe NavMan PiN 100 PocketPC is available in the US, according to PDALive. Running Windows Mobile 2003 (not Second Edition, sadly), the NavMan orients around built-in GPS hardware and software, but is also able to do all the other good stuff you'd expect from a Pocket PC, like play MP3s and the like. Oddly, they're reporting that the included SD card can only be used with the specific NavMan PiN it comes with -- maybe there is DRM'd software preinstalled? Whatever the deal, the $500 PiN also has an SD slot for storing additional maps and data.

navman_635_200.jpg imageHey, what's "POI alert" on GPSes? Oh, is that Points of Interest? Why would that be "Big in Europe?" These French jokes are hard.

Why do I ask? Well, apparently I go to French GPS sites to get information about Navman USA's newly announced iCN 635, a new handheld GPS (global position system, hello) that includes a map display option of elevation data -- reportedly the first GPS unit to do so. That's pretty hot, actually. I can think of at least one Perl munging, Arrogant Bastard Ale swilling, rock-climbing geek that will get him self in a (b)lather over this one. (Thanks, Guillaume!)

navman_icn510_angled-thumb.jpg imageGPS vendor Navman has three new European units, all three of which have nice-sized color screens and come pre-installed with points of interest for the continent. Coolest, though, is the high-end model, the £800 Navman iCN650, which has on its built-in 2GB hard drive the whole of Western Europe's street-level data. Sometimes I wish I lived on a continent the size of a shoe-box, too. (A very nice shoe-box, at that, so put down that hate mail!)

Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth

Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth 06/10/2004 11:38 AM

bluetooth.jpgThe Bluetooth SIG, the group that controls the standards that define the short-range radio networking technology has announced a proposal for a new version of Bluetooth that offers data rates almost 3 times as fast as the previous version. Called Bluetooth EDR (for Enhanced Data Rate), the new specification claims data rates of up to 2.1Mbps and remains backward-compatible with the original Bluetooth spec. No word, however, if the enhanced data rate will causes a proportionate decrease in range, not unlike 802.11g compares to 802.11b.
