Email Follies, Part II

Email Follies, Part II 06/17/2005 03:44 PM

K etchup stain sparks e-mail flurry: A secretary at a London law firm accidentally spilled ketchup on the pants of a senior associate of the firm at lunch. He sent her an email asking for £4 to have his pants cleaned.

She responded with wonderful sarcasm and CC'd some people, who forwarded it to others, and it was sent throughout the entire London legal community over the course of a day. The senior associate now looks like an idiot.

[The secretary wrote, ] "I apologize again for accidentally getting a few splashes of ketchup on your trousers. Obviously your financial need as a senior associate is greater than mine as a mere secretary."

She wrote that she had told various partners, lawyers and trainees about his e-mail and they had offered to "do a collection" to raise the cash.

"I however declined their kind offer but should you feel the urgent need for the £4, it will be on my desk this afternoon."

Be careful what you email. It wasn't worth the $7.32.

(And what was "Email Follies, Part I," you ask? This post or thi s one, take your pick.)

Looking for fun things you can do with a

Looking for fun things you can do with a
PGP/GnuPG key
01/27/2004 10:57 PM

When I was asked "What else can you do with a PGP/GnuPG key beyond the normal signing/encrypting of files and e-mail messages?", I thought about it and came up with a couple of ideas... but the question continued to nag at me and I finally decided to do a 5-minute "lightning talk" at an upcoming OCLUG meeting to talk about the topic.

I've come up with a list of ideas and would appreciate any other suggestions that folks may have. PGP-encrypted IM, signing web pages... more... I am especially interested in things that "regular users" (i.e. non-developers) can do with PGP keys.

The GNU Privacy Guard (a.k.a. GnuPG, or simply gpg) is a free software implementation of Philip Zimmermann's notorious, powerful, and popular program PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). GnuPG is cooler than a secret decoder ring, so get out of that GUI recliner for a few minutes and come learn a couple of secret spy crypto command line tricks.
