Forget The Electric Guitar, It's Time To
Go For The Digital Guitar
02/18/2004 01:19 PM
Growing up, I always thought the coolest thing my father owned was a beautiful Les Paul Gibson electric guitar. The famous electric guitars really haven't change all that much over the years since they were introduced, but they're finally catching up to the digital age. Gibson is getting ready to start selling a digital version of the guitar. It looks and plays like a regular Les Paul, but the sound is sent out digitally, making it easier to manipulate. Instead of regular audio cables, you'll plug in an ethernet cable (no WiFi?). Of course, some traditionalists are upset, and others point out that people will need all new equipment to use such a digital guitar. Among the features of the guitar will be the ability to upgrade the guitar as the digital offering improves. My first thought on reading this, though, was how soon it would be before someone hacks their guitar. We no longer need amplifiers that can go to 11, because we'll just be able to overclock our guitars.

Will the future belong to cellphone

12/06/2003 01:08 PM
Everytime we write about cellphone jammers we get at least one piece of hate mail, usually some bizarre, long-winded rant about how I'll be the one going to jail if a doctor isn't able to receive an important phone call, etc. At the risk of inspiring those person or persons to launch yet another angry missive, there's an article over at Slate about cellphone jammers (like the handset-shaped SHO66P, pictured at right) that argues that in the era of cameraphones they might be the only way to get a modicum of privacy back. Wireless Jamming Debate Rages On

Wireless Jamming Debate Rages On 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
With the number of cell phone users worldwide fast approaching one billion individuals, it was inevitable that some of the ubiquitous devices would be used either rudely -- or even with criminal intent. Consequently, a number of companies have developed signal-jamming technologies -- and report doing brisk business, despite widespread bans on their use.

Everyone's Jamming Cell Phones

Everyone's Jamming Cell Phones 12/08/2003 04:42 AM
Mobile phone signal jammers are illegal in the US, but that doesn't mean they're not used. They're apparently increasingly common, and are expected to spread quite a bit in the near future. The FCC says that using a jammer is considered "theft" of airwaves, because that spectrum has been allocated as property to a commercial entity. The writer of the article wonders, though, about "passive jamming" - such as putting up buildings made of material that block out cell phone signals. While some don't like the idea of having their signals blocked - others think it may become a lot more popular in the future, if only to have areas to "disconnect". The article points to the rise of camera phones as a "bottom up surveillance society" as a reason why we might want areas that have no signal. That makes little sense to me, since anyone using a camera phone can still snap the picture, and then just upload it later when they're in range of a signal. Still, it will be interesting to see if anti-jamming equipment becomes popular. Most people have no idea if a jammer is being used, since it just looks like there's no service. This makes it very difficult to figure out if someone is using a jammer, and means that no one's getting caught using these things right now.

Business Travelers Suspect Phone Jamming

Business Travelers Suspect Phone Jamming 09/07/2004 03:53 PM
Some business travelers suspect that hotels use illegal cell phone jammers to encourage guests to use their expensive hotel phones: It appears difficult to prove whether hotels are using such jammers but the companies selling the jammers are staying in business and they say they're selling to hotels. In the past, before my employers paid for my cell phone, I always used calling cards in hotels to avoid the exorbitant phone charges. If hotels are making it difficult for guests to use their cell phones in their rooms, perhaps business travelers will have to start using cell phones where they work and calling cards in rooms....

Italy Jamming Mobile Phone Cheaters

Italy Jamming Mobile Phone Cheaters 06/18/2004 12:59 PM
The FCC has made it clear that they don't want people jamming mobile phone signals in the US (though, the government is exempt from those rules). The FCC argues that jamming mobile phone signals is theft of airwaves -- but, more importantly, the dangers of someone missing an important call outweigh any benefit of silence. Still, many other countries don't see it that way, and mobile phone jamming systems are increasingly common in places like theaters (and, even hotels). Now, a school in Italy has decided that mobile phone based cheating is such a big problem that they're installing phone jammers to stamp out the possibility. Seems like a mighty big stick to pull out to stop some cheating kids. Honestly, I'm still a big confused how most students cheat with mobile phones. While phones are clearly getting smaller and smaller, and kids are quite good at punching in text messages without looking, they're still fairly large objects compared to traditional cheat sheets.

JamPlug Guitar Amp

JamPlug Guitar Amp 08/16/2004 08:06 AM

7jamplug.jpg imageDVForge's new JamPlug, an in-line (well, I guess most audio equipment is inline, but bear with me) amplifier that is billing itself as the "World's Smallest Guitar Amp," and for once a world's-smallest claim is probably on the money. The $60 piece runs on a single AAA battery and has a pair of strangely-familiar matching white headphones. The thumb wheel controls volume, and it even can be overdriven into some quality of distortion, which probably isn't the best sounding fuzz or crunch or whatever in the world, but if it can free the legion of pimply guitar noodlers from the curse that is the Rockman Metal Ace, then the amateur rock world will surely be a better place.

Won't ship until October, but you can get on the list now to be notified.

Hello Kitty Guitar 09/01/2004 09:36 AM

Although this Hello Kitty guitar is about four times the price of what I'd actually want to pay for it... hey, Hello Kitty guitar! The Fernandez-made electric has a built-in speaker and amplifier so you can plug a headphone right in and start writing your ode to ultimate adorability. And while the polka dot version is shown here, there is apparently a matching sparkly pink version the guy selling these can get a hold of. Now we're talking something worth $400.

What acolyte of rock wouldn't be proud to walk through a smokey club with a matching pink gig bag? None I would prefer to rock to, that's for sure.

Optek Fretlight Guitar

Optek Fretlight Guitar 03/24/2005 02:53 PM

fretlight.jpgThe Optek Fretlight combines a standard Stratocaster clone with a light-up LED neck, making it easier to learn how to play the guitar or learn new songs. The Fretlight happens to be a MIDI guitar, too, so you can send signals to it from standard music applications, or even other instruments. That means your instructor could play a short riff, which would light up on your guitar. And with quoted prices around $600 or so, it's relatively affordable (compared to other MIDI guitars, at least).

Take Center Stage Among Desktops
12/29/2004 11:54 AM
This month's Top 15 Desktop PCs chart highlights two trends: the emergence of powerful new gaming systems that have sophisticated style, and the rapidly growing selection of Media Center PCs, which expand PC-based home entertainment beyond gaming. Examples of the former are two new Athlon-fueled machines that sit atop the power section of our chart: Alienware's Aurora 64 FX-55 and ABS's Ultimate M5-64. Both of these systems are visually appealing without shouting "I'm just for games." Not only are they the two fastest systems on the chart, but they also produced outstanding sound with their high-end Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 cards and their 5.1-channel Logitech speakers (the X-530 and the Z-680, respectively).
