Wired (and unwired) tech at the DNC in
Boston
07/27/2004 06:07 PM
From the NYT, an interesting piece on the geeky underpinnings of the Democratic National Convention's communication infrastructure:
Most cellular carriers are augmenting their coverage in Boston to make sure the surge in traffic does not lead to a rash of busy signals and disconnected calls. Nextel, the official mobile provider to both conventions, is deploying its iDEN network with encryption codes used by the National Security Agency to make sure no one eavesdrops on all the deal making.

The company is supplying modified BlackBerry devices that allow conventioneers to access the Internet wirelessly at high speeds. It has also helped connect the many public safety agencies, which typically communicate over different frequencies. Nextel expects its customers to log millions of minutes on its DirectConnect service, which turns cellphones into walkie-talkies.

"It's like organizing a wedding on steroids," said Matt Foosaner, senior director of Nextel's emergency response team, referring to the arrangements his company is making for the conventioneers. "They are not going to stay tied down to a landline."

Grokster campout in Wired News

Grokster campout in Wired News 03/30/2005 04:32 AM
Cory Doctorow: Wired News's Katie Dean covered the Grokster trial in DC yesterday, camping out with the copyfighters who waited all night to get into the hearing.
For entertainment, the file-sharing faithful brought laptops and books. Disabato also brought an iPod shuffle loaded with controversial music from Dangermouse, a DJ known for causing a kerfuffle when he illegally mixed the Beatles' White Album with Jay Z's The Black Album. He also included a bootleg mix called "Piracy Funds Terrorism," by MIA and Diplo, on his iPod. He brought some small speakers to broadcast the music to others in line but wasn't sure if the security guards around the court would let him use them.

As the night wore on, Seth Schoen, staff technologist for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, ordered five pizzas to be delivered to the Supreme Court. Others took turns going for coffee.

Peer-to-peer software engineer Francis Crick (the grandson of Francis Crick, one of the discoverers of the double-helix structure of DNA) made the trip from Los Angeles. He said if the entertainment companies succeed in shutting down peer-to-peer networks, the case will impair the development of new technologies in the United States.

Groove has a few wins under their belt in the school of "simple and local." Each example highlighted the power of having arich, smart client - which didn't necessarily need some round tripping http server thingie as it's smarts. These sexy sucess stories really elucidate for me - the future of RIAs.

I got to sing opera and make sure that the digital ID panel didn'tdisgress into yet another discussion of "what is identity?"

I did get the FOAFnet meme and story out - and also got to hear danah boyd discuss the difference between multiple identities (which she claims fragments the user's sceanario) - as opposed to facets of one's life - which presents a comprehensive simgle approach to multiple aspects of your life.

I actually think she's right theoretically - but I'm afraid that people need a metaphor like "multiple identities" - to hang their hat on.

Since the early days of his development of Lotus Notes, Ray Ozzie has competed vigorously with Microsoft while working closely with Redmond as a leading ISV on the Windows platform. Now, with Microsoft's significant investment in Ozzie's Groove Networks, the collaboration has broadened. In the aftermath of Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles, Ozzie spoke about Longhorn and Groove with eWEEK Contributing Editor Steve Gillmor.

Ray Ozzie muses on software development

Ray Ozzie muses on software development 08/11/2002 12:20 PM
In terms of building software that people actually use, I strictly prioritize my platform investments and always have based upon "where the users are". No religion. Obviously that means Windows first. But we didn't know what to make of the Linux phenomenon when we were building Groove, so we covered our bases by funding a company (Macadamian) to enhance Wine so that Groove would run. We eventually gave up: nobody gave a hoot about Linux on the desktop.

Regarding the Mac, two factoids - take them for what you will: a) the top personal request on the Groove website is currently "when will there be a Mac version?", and b) no major enterprise customer has yet asked to purchase a Mac version. Quite perplexed.

Jack in the Box yuppified is JBX 05/19/2004 01:27 AM
San Diego-based blogger Joe Crawford brings news of "JBX," a new experiment by San Diego-based fast food giant Jack in the Box.
[N]ot exactly fast food. The look of the stores is quite different -- Chipotle meets Starbucks, but they still have the classic tacos. There are two of these stores in San Diego - pilot stores. They're like concept cars, but restaurants.
Non sequitur: One of my first geek jobs was working in a sweatshop full of nerds an Internet Professional Services Firm in San Diego. One of my first big client meetings there was a bid for a redesign of the Jack in the Box website, which had only just launched the year prior. This was, like, the paleolithic era of the Interweb. Anyway, in the pitch meeting, one of my co-workers -- a webmonkey who really wanted to be an ad man -- said to the Jack in the Box execs, "Come on, nobody actually comes to your restaurant because the food tastes any good -- we're selling IMMERSIVE USER EXPERIENCE here, not flavor." We lost the bid.

Jack the Sickert 12/30/2003 09:51 AM
Wanna read a bad book? Borrow a copy of Patricia Cornwell's Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper - Case Closed. I like Cornwell enough to have read all (?) of her Scarpetta series even though I've been disappointed by each of them; often they have a good set-up but resolve the situation by the literary equivalent of running people over with trucks. Portrait of a Killer, though, pretty much just stinks. In it, she "solves" the mystery of the Ripper murders. The killer was the artist Walter Sickert. Her evidence isn't just inconclusive, it's annoying. And her certainty —...

E-mail is the jack of all trades, but the master of none. There are better ways to transfer files, hold discussions, deliver notifications, broadcast newsletters, schedule meetings, work collaboratively, and manage personal information. But even though e-mail isn't the best tool for any of these tasks, it provides a single interface to all of them. Here's a challenge: Let's improve the various functions performed by e-mail without multiplying the interfaces people must learn in order to use those functions. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
A favorite example of mine is RSS. It's an inherently opt-in, spam-free channel of communication that can replace certain of email's most broken functions: broadcast newsletters, notifications. But, as NewsGator shows us, RSS can still look and feel like email to the user. ...
