Texas Telecom Bill Dead

Texas Telecom Bill Dead 06/05/2005 10:56 PM
The folks at Save Muni Wireless declare interim victory: The people against a provision of the house bill which didn't make it into the senate version wanted to preserve the rights of cities and towns in Texas to determine whether or not municipal cable, telecom, and broadband was appropriate. Texas has a large number of counties with no broadband service or a single provider, and many of the smaller municipalities were concerned with the full ban. The initial bill would seemingly have required airport authorities run by municipalities to cancel Wi-Fi contracts with private companies based on a pretty conservative reading: meaning no Wi-Fi at DFW, Dallas Love, Austin, Bush Intercontinental, and others. That provision was watered down in later house drafts. The bill failed not because of the municipal part, but because, along with another bill, the senate and house couldn't agree on how to reconcile them. Included in the bills was a proposal to eliminate local cable franchise control, which the telcos wanted to allow them easier entry into the television market without having to negotiate local deals with each town, and deregulation elements that would free incumbents from a number of responsibilities while releasing them from tariffs....

Wi-LAN said that China Telecom is using its gear to deploy a broadband wireless network in Tianjin: China Telecom will use unlicensed frequencies and looks at this deployment as a test before potentially building similar networks in other regions. The point-to-multipoint network can be used to supply data and voice. Wi-LAN uses proprietary technology based on OFDM but says it's the same technology that makes up the 802.16 standard. That standard is backed by the WiMAX Forum, which hasn't started certifying products yet. The press release doesn't seem to be online yet but may be available here eventually....

China Telecom to use Calypso's WiFi
cellphones
12/03/2003 06:08 PM
And in a similar vein, Dottocomu points us towards an article about Calypso Wireless and how they've just sealed a deal to provide China Telecom with combination GSM/WiFi cellphones. The handsets in question are undoubtedly Calypso's C1250i, which you may recall them unveiling to some skepticism back in May, and from the looks of it, China Telecom will be building out a network of WiFi hotspots for the phones to access for Voice over IP and video phone calls. Though they have yet to demonstrate it, Calypso is promising that switching between cellular and WiFi networks will be "seamless" (we'll believe it when we see it). To get around the problem of there not being enough WiFi hotspots to make calls from, Calypso says there will be a program of rebates for phone subscribers who open up their wireless access points to wireless Voice over IP phone calls.
