David Pescovitz: In this week's issue of Nature, neuroscientists report that they've implicated a single gene mutation in Familiar Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome (FASPS), or "early bird syndrome." Often, people who have this condition have no choice but to crash in the early evening and wake up long before dawn. From National Geographic News:

"The net result is you can feel very isolated," (FASPS sufferer Susan) Middlebrook said. "Who wants to party at three in the morning? Nobody I know, and I'm not headed to the local bar to see who's still there." Instead, she quietly cleans the house, makes breakfast, or cuddles up with a book.

About three-tenths of a percent of the world's population lives like this, including two of Middlebrook's sisters, her daughter, and her mother. "Their whole clock is shifted," said Ying-Hui Fu, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco...

The researchers are not yet certain how the gene mutation works to shift people's sleep time. But laboratory experiments suggest mutation slows the activity of a protein called casein kinase I delta (CKIdelta). "The next step is to figure out why," Fu said.

Hasbro updates with a clarification on just what exactly you need to do to redeem your Early Bird Certificate. No mention of what is required if you purchased your set from walmart.com, but what is known has been posted here. *: Jeremy Kline writes in to let us know the walmart.com details: I just got off the phone with Hasbro...and they said that if we ordered the Early Bird Certificate off Walmart.com that we need to send in the original packing slip that came in the box along with the UP Code. Good news...thanks Jeremy.

The best thing about Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing & Life is, even when the thought of sitting down and writing is about as appealing to you as root canal work, she inspires you to want to write. That alone is worth the investment. The book is full of mostly well-established wisdom about the art of writing, but it's written intelligently and with great humour and passion. She really practices what she preaches. She takes you through the standard rules: Write every day at the same time, always write something each day, no matter how brief, or how hard it is; break the job into manageable tasks ("take it bird by bird"); start with short assignments and "shitty first drafts" that just get everything down, and edit later; avoid perfectionism; write about what you know; use your own authentic voice and style; use index cards as reminders, phone friends and experts to get background material you need quickly and authentically, and use writing groups and trusted readers to keep you going and honest. She explains how to deal with writer's block, agents, publishers, and jealousy of other (successful but clearly inferior) writers. What I liked best about the book were some of the humbler, lesser known rules of good writing: Stories tell themselves through you, so it's critical to find means to silence the noise in your head and let them come out Flawed, hopeful narrators are great voices, and points of view, from which to tell your story Plot need be nothing more than the discovery of what each of your characters cares about, revealed vividly and continuously Characters must show strength or courage to be sympathetic Dialogue must be authentic and individual, yet concise and fast-moving Good writers must be observant, reverent, and even startled by life and its lessons Great stories are about great truths, things the writer cares passionately about that come out in the writing: "To be a good writer you not only have to write a great deal, but you have to care." You must trust yourself and your intuition, especially with first drafts, not self-criticize and second guess every step You have to give the best you have always, not save it up for the next story Writers have a duty to the reader to be honest, to make things clearer, to help heal readers' "gaping wounds and dazed expressions", to soothe The book includes an extraordinary 2-page story by the author that illustrates these and other points: It is charming, heartbreaking, full of surprises, imbued with the author's great love for two very special characters, imbued as well with a bit of wonderful, spare, dialogue, some stunning imagery and an improbable analogy. But mostly, the story moves, and in so doing it takes the reader along for the ride. I have one with the heavy blaster and arms in the raised postition. So looks like variants are out there. I included a picture. The Luke Skywalker (Imperial Stormtrooper Outfit) action figure is the only Power Of The Force figure based on costume or situation that wasn’t in Return Of The Jedi. Granted, one could argue the Han Solo (In Carbonite Chamber) could also fit into that category, but it wasn’t entirely based exclusively on the events of the other two films, so it loses out by default; making today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive stand alone in the crowd.

Today we are launching a new feature here at Rebelscum. Anne Neumann has been hard at work preparing for the launch of our Jedi Archives Star Wars collectible database for several months. It has more than 30,000 entries in it already, but we all know there are many more than this to be cataloged. It's not something we can or expect to do ourselves. She will be actively looking for help from you readers to populate and audit the entries such that the data is the very best source available in time. To make room for this link we have moved a few of the quick picks around up top and have added a Jedi Archives link. Soon after you read this we will open up a new forum topic where Anne will moderate discussion of the new Archive. I'd like to wrap up with thanks to Anne. She has put in an amazing amount of time getting this ready.
