have been downloaded since its release on Thursday. In addition, over
1 million songs have been purchased from the iTunes Music Store in the
same 3 1/2 day period. In a press release, Steve Jobs said,

12/15/2003 10:34 AMApple
has
announced that the iTunes Music Store has sold over 25 million
songs since its debut in April. The 25 millionth song, downloaded last
Friday, was "Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!" by Frank Sinatra.
In addition, over 1 million dollars of gift certificates and
allowances have been puchased since their introduction in October.
"With over 25 million songs purchased and downloaded to date, the
iTunes Music Store is hands-down the most successful online music
store," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Music fans are buying
and downloading almost 1.5 million songs per week from the iTunes
Music Store, which is a rate of 75 million songs per year."
iTMS: The Invention of the Year
iTMS: The Invention of the Year
11/11/2003 03:40 AMTime has named Apple's iTunes Music Store The Invention of the Year.
Apple, by using the simple concept of letting users pay a dollar to
download a song has redefined music sales, demonstrated to record
companies that the Internet can provide a practical business model and
let users know there is an alternative to illegally downloading music.
The article does mention a few remaining obstacles for Apple, the
lack of Beatles material on iTMS and sales to international consumers
the most obvious.
iTMS is product of the year
iTMS is product of the year
12/11/2003 10:48 AMTo nobody's surprise, Fortune has named the iTunes Music Store the
Product of the Year. Because Steve Jobs was able to convince the major
music labels to allow Apple to sell music online for 99 cents per
song, consumers have "enefited ethically, by having a viable
alternative to stealing music; and aesthetically, by being able to
search for, preview, and download music with unprecedented ease." The
iTunes Music Store gave music labels a viable business model for
Internet sales,...

iTMS: Coolest Invention of the Year
11/10/2003 11:17 PMTime Magazine has named the iTunes Music Store as one of the "Coolest
Inventions of 2003." The third annual compilation lists inventions and
gadgets designed to make life better. In his assessment, Time's Chris
Taylor writes,
Other inventions this year may have more altruistic intentions (like
Dean Kamen's water purifier) or be more visible on street corners
(like those ubiquitous camera cell phones). But for finally finding a
middle ground between the foot-dragging record labels and the
free-for-all digital pirates and for creating a bandwagon onto which
its competitors immediately jumped, Apple's iTunes Music Store is
Time's Coolest Invention of 2003.

1 Million Free Songs for Download
1 Million Free Songs for Download
07/29/2004 03:28 PMIn my experience, most of the RIAA-hating nerds who swear they'll
never to buy another album again continue to download copyrighted,
RIAA-financed music from less-than-legal sources (and I've done it,
too, so simmer down). What's crazy, though, is that if you
really don't want to bend any laws, there is a wealth of free
music online -- and The Red Ferret Journal just set up a Wiki (a
user-edited web page) to make it even easier. There are hundreds of
thousands of freely downloadable songs on the websites listed (some of
them are even not techno) and thousands more non-RIAA-backed
labels selling songs, too -- so if you really want to fill up that
iPod without "stealing music," you do have an option to do
so.
Mainly, though, I just wanted you to feel extra guilty when you
download RIAA music anyway.
