There's an entertaining new Wired article about a team of four Mexican immigrants from a Phoenix High School taking on MIT and other top schools in the recent MATE ROV contest. Their ROV, named Stinky, was hacked together from PVC pipe and other off-the-shelf parts. Their unconventional design combined with some last minute help from feminine hygiene products resulted in a favorable showing compared to robots entered by leading Universities. Stinky ended up with the design award and the team received a special achievement award in addition to being declared the overall winner of the competition. Their story inspired the Phoenix Union High School District to create the La Vida Robot scholarship fund to benefit the further education of the four team members: Cristian Arcega, Lorenzo Santillan, Luis Aranda, and Oscar Vazquez. Microsoft has finally finished the long-awaited upgrade for Windows XP, which should be available to PC users in August. The second major update since XP was released in October 2001 focuses on fixing the security holes that have plagued it in recent months. Microsoft has followed Apple's lead in turning all the security features on by default, rather then leaving the OS wide-open to attacks. As well as making virus-writers' and hackers' work that much more difficult, the update could also spell the end for the pop-up ad. Internet Explorer 6 will be set to block pop-ups by default, trailing all the other major browsers that have long had built-in pop-up blocking.

La Vida Robot: My buddy Matt tipped me off to these kids. They built an underwater robot that whipped a team from M.I.T. in the Marine Advanced Technology Underwater ROV CHampionship. Not only are they in high school, but they're undocumented immigrants to boot. As such, they couldn't qualify for the financial aid to even attend a place like M.I.T.

Across campus, in a second-floor windowless room, four students huddle around an odd, 3-foot-tall frame constructed of PVC pipe. They have equipped it with propellers, cameras, lights, a laser, depth detectors, pumps, an underwater microphone, and an articulated pincer. At the top sits a black, waterproof briefcase containing a nest of hacked processors, minuscule fans, and LEDs. It's a cheap but astoundingly functional underwater robot capable of recording sonar pings and retrieving objects 50 feet below the surface.

The four teenagers who built it are all undocumented Mexican immigrants who came to this country through tunnels or hidden in the backseats of cars. They live in sheds and rooms without electricity. But over three days last summer, these kids from the desert proved they are among the smartest young underwater engineers in the country.

In a press release, Zyxel claimed it was the first to offer PEAP-in-a-box. That accolade should go, however, to computer-maker Gateway which offered such a device last July (my review). Its Gateway 7001 series (802.11g for $299, a+g for $399) features built-in PEAP and built-in VLAN segregation. It has two Ethernet ports which allow physical network segregation as well as virtual.
