Fade Text In on Page Load
Fade Text In on Page Load
01/23/2004 12:10 AMI learned a neat little HTML/Javascript trick on the about page of the newly
launched Orkut from Google.
Here is the trick (be fast, or reload the page):
This text will fade in on page load. But
this text won't (It's displayed in-line as the page is built).
It's accomplished with code that looks like this:
<html>
<head>
<script language="javascript">
col=255;
function fade() { document.getElementById("fade").style.color="rgb("
+ col + "," + col + "," + col + ")"; col-=5; if(col>0)
setTimeout('fade()', 10); }
</script>
</head>
<body onLoad="fade()">
<p>
<span id="fade">This text will fade in.</span> But this
text won't.
</p>
</body></html>
Pretty cool huh?
(If it doesn't seem to work for you, it's probably because this
page loads pretty slowly... see the individual archive page for it to look more
natural.)

Location Server
06/29/2004 07:09 AMToday, Microsoft Corp. and European mobile operators O2 and
TeliaSonera announced plans to deliver real-time location services
designed to enable businesses to significantly improve the way they
locate, track and manage their mobile assets and mobile work force.
The real-time location services are built around Microsoft®
MapPoint® Location Server (MLS) and enable developers, independent
software vendors (ISVs) and system integrators to create and deploy
location-aware business applications for their customers by combining
the real-time location data from the O2 and TeliaSonera networks with
the rich mapping and location capabilities from the Microsoft MapPoint
Web Service.

The Zooming User Interface
The Zooming User Interface
08/15/2004 08:45 PMEven in the present day, the desktop metaphor still pervades, but
with increases in the amount of information available to any one
person, this metaphor is felt to be in need of a reworking. The
zooming user interface (ZUI) is an idea first discussed by Bederson
(1993) as a radical change to the way in which a person interacts with
a computer. This paper will initially discuss how a ZUI works,
followed by a review of the empirical literature available.

CSS-Fisheye is a CSS hack that allows you to create lists that zoom on

super-sweet. Try mousing over the text below to see what I mean:
Tiger,
tiger, burning
bright,
In the
forest of
the night,
What
immortal hand
or eye
Could
frame thy fearful
symmetry?
In what
distant deeps
or skies
Burnt the
fire of
thine eyes?
On what
wings dare
he aspire?
What the
hand dare
seize the fire?
And what
shoulder,
and what art,
Could
twist the sinews
of thy heart?
When thy
heart began
to beat,
What
dread hand forged
thy dread feet?
What the
hammer?
What the chain?
In what
furnace was
thy brain?
What the
anvil? What
dread grasp
Dared its
deadly
terrors clasp?
When the
stars threw
down their spears
And
watered heaven
with their tears,
Did He
smile his
work to see?
Did He
who made the
lamb make thee?
Tiger,
tiger, on
the mat,
You're
nothing but
a pussy cat,
But damn

Pentagon Can't Even Keep Track Of The

Pentagon Can't Even Keep Track Of The
Systems That Keep Track Of Stuff
07/08/2004 12:33 PMThe Pentagon certainly isn't known for efficiency in their business
processes, and no one ever said they needed to be run in the same
manner as a profitable business, but the fact that they
can't
even track the thousands of different databases and logistics
systems that are supposed to keep track of all of their purchases
and assets is a bit worrisome. At the very least it's a huge recipe
for fraud, with plenty of already greedy enough defense contractors
clearly abusing the system for great profit to themselves -- at the
expense of our own tax dollars.
Clever zooming tricks improve mobile

Clever zooming tricks improve mobile
user interfaces
03/19/2005 03:03 AMMark Frauenfelder:
In my latest piece for TheFeature, I wrote about way researchers are
using zooming tricks to make web sites easier to use on mobile phones.
[Patrick] Baudisch's solution to this problem is called
"summary thumbnails," which he developed in collaboration with Heidi
Lam at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. It is
a mobile browser that renders pages as thumbnails, but keeps the text
large enough to read. It achieves this by displaying readable text
fragments. For example, a CNN.com headline that reads "Chimpanzee
Attacks Supermodel at Circus" might be shortened to "Chimpanzee
Attacks." All the other headlines and story summaries on the page get
the same treatment. There's no artificial intelligence at work here --
it's simple truncation. But it's surprisingly effective. Baudisch and
Lam conducted a user study and discovered that users found what they
were looking for in web pages 41% faster and at a 71% lower error rate
than they did when they looked for the same content on browsers that
rendered pages as single columns, and that they zoomed 59% less than
when they used ordinary thumbnail rendering browsers.

Speed Record Sets Guinness World Record
"A 23-year-old Singaporean woman appears to have set a world record
for sending text messages over a cellphone, underlining Asia's growing
obsession with cellplhone technology.
Kimberly Yeo thumbed 26
words in 43.24 seconds into her phone, beating a world record of 67
seconds for the same words set by a Briton in September 2003, said
Singapore's dominant telephone carrier, Singapore Telecommunications
(SingTel), on Monday.
Cellphones are an ubiquitous accessory in
technology-savvy Singapore where more than four out of five people own
a handset, giving the wealthy city-state one of the world's highest
cellphone penetration rates.
At a contest in front of a department store on Sunday, Yeo was
among 125 people timed by SingTel and a panel of independent officials
to see how fast they could type the following 160-character message:
'The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus
are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they
seldom attack a human.'...
Yeo, who won a S$17 500 (about R64 000) in cash for her
nimble thumbs, said she sends out about an average of 1 500 text
messages a month to friends and family." [iol, via textuall
