Windows Update v6 Released as Microsoft
Update
06/06/2005 12:13 AM
Thanks eXtermia for the heads up on this news, found at DriverHeaven

They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows Update v6, now dubbed Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000, 2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office 2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft software.

Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users will have to have at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

The Black iPod; Update: Solved!

The Black iPod; Update: Solved! 07/14/2004 12:06 PM

blackipod.jpg imageSo a car company, which I'll call Jaguar (if I may be so bold), is offering up a chance to win a black iPod to promote its X-Type automobile. And what's interesting, besides the chance at a mythical black iPod, is the fact that there was once 75 of these custom-painted devices, at least according to MacCentral. But why? I presume that the other 74 had something to do with Jaguar, too, but where did they go? Were they given to other X-Type buyers? If you know, please share.

My guess? I think the original iPods were black, and then were later changed to white, just like they did to Jesus.

iPod Updater 2005-03-23 Released -- Apple last week released an update for iPod photo owners. The hefty 28.9 MB iPod Updater 2005-03-23 brings the iPod software to version 1.1 and adds support for Apple's forthcoming $30 iPod Camera Connector (announced in February, and now available for order from Apple's online store). It also improves slideshow transitions. The updater is available via Software Update or as a separate download. Although this update offers nothing new for owners of other iPod product lines, it does include the most recent software versions for each model (hence the huge download). [JLC]

iPod Firmware Petition

iPod Firmware Petition 07/22/2004 01:22 PM
With the recent release of the 4G iPods, Apple released an iPod firmware update adding new features/functionality to the iPod. Unfortunately, the new features are only available to 4G ("click wheel") iPods?leaving the not-so-old 3G iPods in the dust. When I first heard about this, my first response was, "Why can?t they just release the same firmware upgrade for both the 3G and 4G models?" I don?t know about models older than 3G, but as far as I know, the new model is exactly the same as the 3G. The firmware could easily work for both. This seems to be a marketing ploy on Apple?s part. Get the people who want these simple new features to buy a whole new iPod. Well, people aren?t buying it. Enter the Apple iPod Firmware Petition, signed by over 3,000 people when this entry was posted, which states the following:
To: Apple Computer We, the owners of previous models of the Apple iPod (1G/2G/3G), believe that we have been snubbed by Apple. With each new generation some or many of the new features added are only software changes, and could be easily added to past iPods with a firmware update. But instead of updating older iPods, Apple has simply ignored older users. We believe that any new improvements that can be added via firmware to the older generation iPods should be instituted Sincerely, The Undersigned
Being a 3G 15GB owner myself, I must agree. How about you?

It's shipping now for US$39.99.

Win an iPod mini at the South Beach iPod Garage Party

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new iPod mini in your pocket?

Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep, it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

08/13/2004 07:17 AM

The transmitter broadcasts your music on any FM frequency on your car stereo, with a backlit display that shows which frequency is in use, while the charger keeps your iPod's battery at full capacity. The RoadTrip plugs into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo. Griffin has left the top of the US$79.99 device open for use with other iPod accessories, which means RoadTrip isn't compatible with the 1G and 2G iPods that have FireWire ports on top.

SendStation Systems and RadTech have released two new PocketDock models and MiniSleevz for iPod mini, respectively. SendStation's PocketDock is an adapter that allows users to connect their iPods to their Macs with standard FireWire cables instead of Apple's docking cables. The company's new PocketDock Combo (US$22.95) contains USB and FireWire ports that accept standard USB cables as well as 6-pin FireWire cables. The PocketDo ck Line Out ($29.95) also features a 6-pin FireWire port but adds a 3.5mm (1/8-inch) stereo jack that bypasses the iPod's headphones amplifier for better sound quality when connecting the MP3 player to external speakers. It comes with two six-foot white audio cables. Both PocketDock models are available now and are compatible with Apple's 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40GB iPods, as well as the iPod mini.
