In its first year, music fans have purchased more than 70 million songs, making it the number one online music service in the world with more than 70% market share of legal downloads for singles and albums. iTunes customers are currently purchasing 2.7 million songs per week, a rate of 140 million songs per year. To kick off its second year, Apple today launched the third generation iTunes Music Store, featuring the industry’s largest online music catalog of over 700,000 songs from all five major music companies and over 450 independent music labels, as well as groundbreaking new features. DRM in iTunes On, Off, Now On Again 03/24/2005 11:50 AM

Jon Johansen’s PyMusique application which allowed purchasing and downloading of music from iTunes Music Store without the normal DRM attached was shut down by Apple, and now is back working again. PyMusique does not write out DRM to the song, leaving it unprotected and free to be used on an unlimited number of machines. Johansen says he wrote the program to allow Linux users to buy music from iTunes music store, the ability to move the music from machine to machine without the DRM is just a nice side-effect. Looks like this serve and volley will continue for a while.

Kim Polese anniversary

Kim Polese anniversary 04/14/2004 05:04 PM

A picture named polese.jpgFour years ago today, Salon ran reactions to the stock market carnage, the bubble burst so many anticipated. Three years before that on this day, Time Magazine named Marimba CEO Kim Polese one of the 25 most influential Americans. [Scripting News]

Kim's one of my favorite people.

She ain't done yet.

Let's see she's on the boards of Technorati and Marimba, she's part of the TechNet - our lobbying group in Wash. D.C., she's also on the boards of Global Security Institute, Sillicon Valley Manufacturer's Group, the U.C. President's board of Science and Technology, she's an MIT Fellah and a Longnow fellah.

Throughout the turmoil and hype - she and her team at Marimba stayed focused on building a world class company, which attained profitability and who's software is used by millions.

Kim is a woman who has overcome what I call "the curse of beauty". If anyone speaks negatively of her - it's probably 'cause they're jealous.

NewburyOpen.Net, a commercial free community network, celebrates two years of operation: The brainchild of Michael Oh, the network offers free service subsidized by businesses that promote themselves through the offering. Oh is also known for some of his stunts, like pulling up a Wi-Fi equipped, Internet linked car in front of a Boston Starbucks. The network is open in several senses, including offering these white papers that describe how to create your own, similar network from infrastructure to marketing. The idea that Oh started hasn't spread too far yet: there are few other business areas offering the marketing/advertising/Wi-Fi combination that NewburyOpen.Net is. But the idea of free Wi-Fi in business districts, sometimes funded by municipalities and associated businesses, is a meme that keeps spreading....
