Iraq Sneakers 04/28/2004 07:14 AM

It's a little outside our bailiwick, but we'll go all Josh Rubin here for a second to mention these Dsquared 'Iraq' Sneakers, similar in style to the Canada or Brazil sneakers that you people without metal stumps for legs get such a kick out of. Now you can support the...

Wow, there's a lot of books about sneakers. Well, more than I would expect anyway. My favorite sneakers were a pair of Nike Air Darwin shoes I bought back in college. They were all-black low tops with a smallish white Swoosh placed backwards right below the ankle, simply designed, very cool-looking, and comfortable. Sneakers these days look either like Jackson Pollack paintings or classic cars (complete with shock absorbers), making... (with comments)

An anonymous reader sent this image, identifying it as the creation of some dude named Al Cabino. It is said to be a sneaker constructed from pure Swiss chocolate. This blog posts the same info. It's either a silly hoax, or a brilliant exercise in choco-licious but impractical footwear.

While it doesn't sound quite as fun as PacManhattan, Nike seems to be getting into the spirit of real world/wireless games by coming up with an advertising campaign that will send SMS text messages to mobile phones telling them where they can find a particular poster. When they arrive at the post, they're told to submit the special code on the poster back to Nike. Players get points for both the number of posters they find and the speed with which they get to them. If they "win" they get a chance to "pre-buy" a pair of new Nike sneakers. Winners get the chance to buy something? Doesn't seem like much of a win to me, but maybe I'm just holding out for those smarter sneakers. Also, to be honest, this game doesn't sound like much fun. It sounds sort of like a mobile version of "fetch." They tell you where to go, you go, and you retrieve a code and send it back to them. Where's the challenge?

I thought you might be interested in hearing about a convertible shoe since you also covered the Strutz high heel shoe. I was at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City and found this company called Blue Away (their website is ) and they've created the world's first hiking shoe. The shoe converts into a hiking sandal and the upper portion can be scrunched up and thrown into a backpack so I guess it's good for those that don't want to carry a lot of weight and space. Check out the photos I took of it; please excuse the low res camera phone quality of them. Pretty cool, huh?

"Back-to-Iraq" bl0gger is back in Iraq 05/20/2004 05:43 PM
Clive sez: "Chris Allbritton has begun blogging from Iraq. He's the writer who raised $13,000 last year from his blog readers to fund an indie-reporting trip to Iraq during the war. His readers have asked him to go back, and he raised another $11,000 in the last few months. He just arrived in Baghdad, and has begun writing more of his excellent stuff -- slices of everyday life in one of the most fraught places on earth. The first post describes the crazily harrowing landing you have to endure when you fly into Baghdad, as the plane corkscrews down to avoid shoulder-mounted missiles:"
After a normal flight, we went into a tight, corkscrew dive that sent your stomach up into your throat — and in the case of two passengers, out their mouths and into their laps. It’s a vomit-comet experience. But if you like roller coasters in a sealed container where you can’t really see anything, it’s a lot of fun. Just don’t think about the very real threat of shoulder-mounted SAMs.

How to Get Out of Iraq

How to Get Out of Iraq 04/26/2004 09:52 PM
How to Get Out of Iraq by Peter Galbraith

Much of what went wrong was avoidable. Focused on winning the political battle to start a war, the Bush administration failed to anticipate the postwar chaos in Iraq. Administration strategy seems to have been based on a hope that Iraq's bureaucrats and police would simply transfer their loyalty to the new authorities, and the country's administration would continue to function. All experience in Iraq suggested that the collapse of civil authority was the most likely outcome, but there was no credible planning for this contingency. In fact, the US effort to remake Iraq never recovered from its confused start when it failed to prevent the looting of Baghdad in the early days of the occupation.

Much of the news from Iraq looks grim and it's easy to feel powerless about the whole situation. Mercycorps lets you do something about it, with 92% of all money collected going directly to humanitarian programs to feed, clothe, and provide healthcare to Iraq citizens in need. Looks like a good cause I'm happy to get behind.

How to get out of Iraq. The Nation: There is, however, no agreement or even clarity about such an exit strategy. Nor is any leadership on this crucial issue coming from the Bush Administration or as yet, alas, from the presumptive Democratic candidate, Senator John Kerry. With a sense of obligation and urgency, The Nation, has asked a range of writers, both regular and new contributors to the magazine, for their ideas on America's way out of Iraq

A Day Without Iraq 05/10/2004 09:44 PM
I'm exposed to little[1] of the what the mainstream media considers "news" outlets, but I still find myself feeling beat to death with "news" about Iraq. I would like one day to pass during which I can look at a mainstream newspaper, web site, and other media outlet without seeing a single mention of Iraq or the so-called "war" there. Is that really too much to ask? Does the average person really care so deeply about what's going on in...

Bloggers in Iraq

Bloggers in Iraq 04/21/2004 10:06 AM
A piece in today's USA Today about the growing weblog community -- in Iraq.
Fadhil's blog, iraqthemodel.blogspot.com, tells of his life and the lives of his two brothers. One brother also is a dentist, and the other is a pediatrician. "We wanted to help bridge the gap, not just between the U.S. and Iraq, but with the entire Islamic world," says Ali Fadhil, 34, the pediatrician. "The media is always taking a look at the bad stuff. We want to show the good progress in Iraq." The brothers' blog is written with an unusually pro-American viewpoint, especially coming from three Sunni Muslims. Sunnis — among them, Saddam Hussein — dominated Iraq's majority Shiite Muslim population before the war.

(...)There are about 30 Iraqi bloggers in Baghdad, plus a few other blogs written by Iraqis abroad. Not all share the Fadhil brothers' optimism. "You have your Fox TV. I am offering a counter response," says Faisa Jarrar, whose blog is critical of the U.S. occupation. Her mixed Sunni-Shiite family began in December with a joint blog, afamilyinbaghdad.blogspot.com. Now, each of Jarrar's three sons has his own blog. Raed, 26, Jarrar's eldest, is studying in Jordan. Khalid, 21, and Majid, 17, are in Baghdad. "All of our efforts are more individual efforts, but we have one common goal, to show the world what is really going on," Majid says.

Iraq applies for TLD ".iq"

Iraq applies for TLD ".iq" 06/04/2004 02:04 PM
Iraq has applied for the top level domain, .iq which would identify web addresses ending in .iq as “existing in Iraq”. IANA, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority is already listing .iq as the top level domain for Iraq, (see entire list) but there is no more information available. The USA Today story references a survey done by the US - led occupation in Iraq which reports 6% of Iraqis surveyed have access to the Internet and 2% say they access the Internet regularly. 12% of Iraqi’s surveyed own computers.

AP: G.I. Joe Captured in Iraq!

AP: G.I. Joe Captured in Iraq! 02/05/2005 09:47 PM
A little after noon on February 1, the Associated Press released a news alert saying they'd found a photo on a message board (ansarnet.ws, according to this AP article) along with a message that foreigners had captured many American soldiers. Copies of the original versions of the article are still floating around the 'net. A couple of hours after releasing it, an advisory moved across the wire, asking editors not to run AP Photo LON128, because of "questions being raised about the image." As of the last version of the story I've found (from around 4 p.m. EST), the AP is trying to not make a big deal out of the fact they goofed ... big time. And yet the photo is so G.I. Joe when you look at it the first time.

The other news from Iraq

The other news from Iraq 01/07/2004 04:24 PM

I had dinner here in Mexico City with a reporter who was about to return to Iraq, where he has already been twice in 2003.  The impression that I'd gotten from following the news in the U.S. is that the situation in Iraq is improving very gradually.  The progress is hard to see like the rising of an exponential function near 0 but eventually it might take off sort of like the diode equation around 0.6 volts even though actually the curve is the same.

The reporter, who'd spent a couple of months on the ground in Baghdad already, was much more pessimistic:  "Iraq isn't a country; it is three countries:  a Kurdish north, a Sunni center, and a Shiite south.  These people all hate each other and would like nothing more than a civil war so that they can all kill each other.  The only thing that is stopping them right now is the fact that 95% hate Americans, maybe 10% enough to try to kill Americans personally."

He was not looking forward to returning.  "I'm afraid, to tell you the truth.  I've worked in Kabul and been in the middle of skirmishing warlords in Afghanistan but Iraq is a lot scarier."
