USAToday.com has an article about how NASA is working on integrating robot aircraft into the nation's airspace. It could be as early as 2008 that we will have robot planes (UAV drones) routinely sharing civil airspace. Currently there are UAVs flying, but they are mostly restricted to military airspace. Humans and robots in the same airspace surely will require several gentleman's agreements!

AP - Think Edward Scissorhands, but with bolt drivers and pliers for hands and a giraffelike neck topped with a pair of cameras resembling black cratered eyes instead of the handsome head of Johnny Depp. Could this strange robot take the place of astronauts in fixing the Hubble Space Telescope? NASA is yearning to find out.

2003-11-05: The WAI Protocols and Formats Working Group has released the first public Working Draft of Inaccessibility of Visually-Oriented Anti-Robot Tests. Requests for visual verification of a bitmapped image pose problems for those who are blind, have low vision, or have a learning disability such as dyslexia. The draft examines ways for systems to test for human users while preserving access for users with disabilities. Comments are welcome. Read about the Web Accessibility Initiative. (News archive)

Pekee Mobile Robot Platform

Pekee Mobile Robot Platform 06/07/2004 07:29 AM

wany_robot.jpg imageForget all that half-assed consumer robot crap -- the Pekee Mobile Robot Platform is a real robot, designed as an open platform for students and researchers who want to know more about robotics and the subjects it touches, like AI, networking, signal analysis, and particle destabilization rays. Hell, you could even build your own Roomba, if that's what you wanted, using the capabilities of the embedded microcontrollers (Mitsubishi M16c) , video camera, 802.11b, gyrometers, and temperature, light, shock, and infrared sensors. You can even program it in good ol' Visual C++ (or something more robust, probably, if you're bright enough to code your own interface). Sure, its casing looks like a Volkswagen dropping, but for $10k you can't expect to get ED-209.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has given the green light to a project that will build the largest ever supercomputer based on Silicon Graphics Inc.'s (SGI) 512-processor Altix computers.

Computer

One of the conclusions from the report into the 2003 space shuttle disaster was that NASA lacked enough computing power. As such, NASA have decided to invest in a massive Linux based cluster of computers, to patch over it's IT requirement problems. The computer will be based on SGI Altix computers, each with 1,000Gb of memory, and 20x512 Intel Itanium 2 processors (10,240 in total). It will uses SGI switching technology, and have in total 500 terabytes of storage. The whole system will increase NASA's IT computing base by 10 times.

Unlike previous super computers, 'Project Columbia', as it will be formally known, will be built with 'off the shelf' kit (akin to the GIT Apple Cluster), making it a lot cheaper than the previous generation of super computers, and a lot faster to assemble. Richard Dracott, from Intel's enterprise platforms group said "This is the epitome of change in supercomputing." In total, the project cost will be about $160 million; the computer will be made available to other government agencies to help off set the high price tag.

The computer will be used for mission planning and working on other complex models, such as climate change and physics calculations, like gravity modelling. When built, it will be one of the largest Linux super computers / clusters in the world.
