Why The Google IPO Hype Isn't Hype 05/12/2004 01:21 AM

Google Worried Its IPO Will Be Filtered

Google Worried Its IPO Will Be Filtered
Away As Spam
08/09/2004 12:51 PM
There have been plenty of stories in the past year or so about legitimate emails being filtered away as spam (even the NY Times caught up on this topic last week). However, in an amusing twist, Google is suddenly realizing that their IPO-by-email system may run into problems with spam filters, and are trying to pre-warn ISPs to whitelist all the emails they're about to send out concerning the IPO. Of course, this probably means the next big phishing expedition is going to involve spoofed Google IPO emails. Perhaps email isn't really the best way to go about offering such information. Meanwhile, it will be amusing to see if reports come out that Yahoo or Hotmail just happen to classify Google IPO emails as spam. Just think of the conspiracy theories.

The Google Bubble

The Google Bubble 04/26/2004 05:27 PM

Everyone's talking about Google because the company has to release some key financial data this week, causing lots of folks to assume an IPO filing is in the works. No doubt that's true, but I keep wondering why -- except to make the insiders happy -- this IPO is going to happen at this stage. Here we have a successful company, making (reportedly) tons of money and investing it wisely. Does Google need the distraction an IPO will bring as much as the insiders -- especially the venture capitalists -- crave the cash-out? More on this in the next few days...

Bubble or no bubble, that is the
question
04/14/2004 09:13 AM
"The real estate bubble's gonna pop!" You seem to hear that all the time... But dig deeper and you find that other people don't even think there's a bubble. Others think there's a bubble, but it's gonna keep growing. Then, just to make it interesting, you've got others who said the bubble was going to pop back in 2002. Why is first-time home-buying this friggin' difficult?!

Bill Joy Still Worried

Bill Joy Still Worried 11/19/2003 02:16 PM
Wired Magazine's latest interview is with everyone's favorite worrier, Bill Joy, talking about why he's both optimistic and pessimistic about the future. He remains, as you might expect, quite opinionated, believing that there are plenty of near term opportunities for technology as computers get more powerful. However, he's still worrying about how we're all going to blow ourselves up if we don't come up with some sort of Hippocratic Oath for technologists.

Slightly worried now

Slightly worried now 08/31/2004 11:52 AM
OK... So I managed today to fix all the things that cropped up today, and I have a huge backlog of things that occurred over the weekend, or during my trip to Oulu, or during my vacation. I got to the point where I was receiving more email than I could handle - the inbox was growing faster than I was emptying it - and I was doing nothing but reading email. I even had to tell people off because I was so busy doing things that I apparently should've done during my vacation (yeah, right) - and I try and never do that.

Not good. I see exhaustion ahead, approaching rapidly. I'm feeling good and energetic after the holidays, but at this rate I'll be dead by November.

(There's a big downside to working within the office hours: people see you and wander over to talk to you about pressing matters. And your work flow is interrupted. If you work outside the office hours, or from home - not that many interruptions. Perhaps I should just stay home for a couple of days, just to get some work done. *grin*)

Microsoft, IBM worried

Microsoft, IBM worried 06/25/2004 08:37 AM
The government's antitrust trial against Oracle's $7.7 billion takeover bid for PeopleSoft motored on Thursday, but outside the courthouse there was still a buzz about previously confidential documents released at the trial late Wednesday. The documents illuminated the facts that both Microsoft and IBM fear the competitive landscape will tilt against them if Oracle takes over PeopleSoft. That unwelcome prospect prompted Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates to begin considering some extraordinary defensive measures the day after Oracle launched its June 2003 bid, according to trial evidence.

E-Filers Not Worried About Security

E-Filers Not Worried About Security 04/15/2005 03:49 PM
It appears that all of the various secur ity breaches getting publicity recently haven't scared away people from e-filing. It turns out the number one reason people aren't e-filing their tax returns this year is that difficu lty in doing e-filing if you had a professional do your taxes for you. In the meantime, though, is it really any surprise that the IRS website is getting bombarded by visitors? Still, though, this highlights the fact that, for many people, convenience is much more important than security.

UK Worried About eBay Gun Loophole

UK Worried About eBay Gun Loophole 11/04/2003 12:09 PM
Over in the UK, they're suddenly worried that people are sneaking guns into the country via eBay. eBay won't sell guns, but will sell gun components - which are being ordered and then assembled once arrived. UK politicians are now trying to close this loophole by banning the sale of even components. This really does seem like a waste of time. If people are really intent on getting themselves weapons, they're going to do so, whether through eBay or other means. That doesn't mean they should be easy to get, but is it really worth the trouble of banning a loophole that already is being used by the sort of folks who will immediately search out a new loophole? Also, considering that eBay seems willing to hand over private info at the first phone call from anyone representing themselves as law enforcement, you'd think that police in the UK might prefer to simply use eBay to keep tabs on just who is importing and building these guns.
