04/17/2004 03:12 PMReuters - In a scene straight from the
19th century, thousands of men in Civil War uniforms and women
in black hoop skirts crowded into this antebellum city on
Saturday to pay final respects to the crew of the H.L. Hunley,
the first submarine to sink an enemy warship.
The primitive, hand-cranked Confederate sub disappeared after
ramming a powder charge into the Union's Housatonic on Feb. 17,
1864, and lay buried in the seabed off South Carolina until a
group bankrolled by best-selling adventure writer Clive Cussler
found it in 1995.
