I finally paid a visit to the place to go in Helsinki for
whisky, Pikkulintu [Klaavuntie 11], in an unsuspecting east suburban
strip mall about 100m from the Puotila metro
station. The name means 'little bird' which breaks from the usual
naming convention for whisky pubs, much like the naming convention for
PC hardware, where as much masculinity and testosterone is placed into
the name as the language will allow, e.g. Ye Olde Cocke and Balls. In
spite of the delicate name and the suburban location, it earns the
reputation for being the best place in Helsinki for whisky lovers
since the list of expressions is impressive and even more impressive
is the owner/bartender behind the bar who knows his whisky and keeps
half of the whisky he has off the list hidden in the back room away
from the dilettantes.
We sat at the rail and had a few wee drams, but the two that were the
most memorable were new Islay malts. The first was the Bowmore Mariner
which is a 15yo dram that has a bit of sherry taste along with the
briny, seaweedy Islay taste. The new Ardbeg Uigeadail (pronounced
Oog-adal) is heavenly and of the alleged 3 bottles currently in
Finland, 2 of them are at Pikkulintu. We tried to order a bottle or 2
from Loch Fyne Whiskies mail order but,
sadly, they're currently awaiting a new bottling. Uigeadail is a cask
strength smoky Ardbeg that has been aged in sherry and bourbon casks
along with a hint of peppery ginger. I really hope that new bottling
comes along soon. :)
Is it a sign I've been living in Finland too long when I keep reading
Hurricane Jeanne as Hurricane Janne? :)

Edinburgh pubs serve short measures of
whisky
Edinburgh pubs serve short measures of
whisky
01/08/2004 07:48 PMHalf of Edinburgh pubs surveyed serve short measures of whisky:
Trading standards officials have called on drinkers to come forward
with information on any pub they suspect of having sold them short.
As well as the premises found serving short measures, more than a
quarter of those visited had no notices stating the quantities spirits
were sold in.
The law says licensed premises must sell spirits in 25ml or 35ml
measures, or multiples thereof, and must clearly indicate which
measure they use.

So Much (Mobile) Anger
06/09/2004 05:14 PMMy latest writeup for TheFeature focuses on a variety of stories
showing that
mobile
phones seem to bring out a ridiculous level of anger in people
when people are told they cannot use their phones. The latest example
is a woman who
attacked a flight attendant for
telling her to stop making phone calls during a flight. This isn't
the first case like that however - and mobile phone rage seems to be
showing up in many places. While it may just be a case of withdrawal
from mobile phone addiction, at some point people are going to need to
learn to lighten up.
More Mobile Anger
More Mobile Anger
06/29/2004 04:05 AMVery few things get a response like stories about people talking
loudly on their mobile phones. I certainly noticed it when I wrote
about
how
mobile phones seemed to make people angry, and a NY Times reporter
is discovering the same thing. He wrote a similar article last week,
and was
inundated
with emails from people expressing displeasure (to put it mildly)
with those who use their mobile phones on trains. Some have even said
that they've had to move back to airplanes instead of trains because
of the noise. Imagine how things will be once people are allowed to
use mobile phones in the air.

Backing up your MySQL data
Backing up your MySQL data
12/27/2004 03:08 AMIf you have ever pulled your hair out in frustration over data loss,
no doubt the word 'backup' has special meaning in your life. Databases
offer a nice way to catalog data, but with the amount of data being
trusted into MySQL databases these days, the after-effects of an
unwise DROP DATABASE command, an unlucky system crash, or a failed
hand-edit of the table structure are catastrophic and can be
unrecoverable -- unless you have a backup to restore from.

Backing Up Our Cultural Heritage Ain't
Easy
Backing Up Our Cultural Heritage Ain't
Easy
04/30/2004 04:13 PMBrewster Kahle's
Web Archive
shouldn't be new to you. The service, which tries to archive as much
web content as possible, is only one part of Kahle's desire to archive
just about every bit of content we create. Of course, in times of
overly broad copyright protection,
archiving our culture
isn't easy. In order to do so, he says there are three questions
that need to be answered: "Can we? May we? Will we?" The answer to
the first is obviously yes. The second is where copyright law gets
complicated. Kahle is pitching his idea as creating a legal "backup"
for all different types of content, but not everyone sees it that way.
They still believe that every version of content (even if it's
digital and infinitely reproducible) needs to be accounted for and
paid for. The final question is still up for debate, but seems
somewhat dependent on the second question. Unfortunately, too many
copyright owners with too narrow a vision don't quite see that they're
doing more harm to themselves by not allowing folks like Kahle the
opportunity to back up our cultural heritage.
