The Fight Between Sharing Culture And
Owning Culture

The Fight Between Sharing Culture And
Owning Culture
06/22/2005 02:17 AM
It seems that museums are finally starting to realize that the digital age represents a real opportunity for them to reach many new people by digitizing their offerings and sharing the culture they represent across a much wider audience than a physical museum allows. It seems that many museums are having trouble figuring out how to digitize their collections, and would welcome help in doing so. However, another story points out how that can cause problems when the people involved get stuck on intellectual property issues. Apparently some people who created 3D digital versions of Michelangelo's David are freaking out that if they share the digitization without some form of copy protection people might (gasp!) share it without permission. Wait a second... isn't that what they should want? That would allow them to share the cultural wonder with many, many more people, and allow them to experience it in ways never possible before. That's a good thing, not something to be worried about. However, in an age where people seem to think that every idea, concept, software or piece of data needs to be "owned" and locked up, apparently it's the natural response -- and that's unfortunate for every culture.

Already testing in San Diego, Cox Communications cable TV service is getting ready to roll out HD programming in quite a few markets, including Phoenix, Arizona, and will bundle an optional Scientific Atlanta 8010 high-definition DVR for only $10 more a month (or maybe that's $10 for the service and another $10 for the box). Still, yum! Anymore trying this out in San Diego? What do you think? (Thanks, Ben!)

Thank heavens I have a two-tuner DirecTiVo and so am relatively unaffected by the ongoing silly buggers being played by NBC with the starting and ending times of its programming. While some try to explain the fact that shows start at 8.59 and end at 10.13 as something to do with ratings, the net result is that you can't reliably record a show on a non-NBC channel from 9-10 and then something on NBC starting at 10--make that 9.57 or the like. My TiVo routinely plays second PVR to my parents' first-gen single-tuner TiVo.

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different
08/03/2004 12:32 PM
Apparently, marketers are just now figuring out that browsing and searching are two different modes of web surfing, and people will t reat ads differently in each situation. Some pointed this out quit e a while ago, but thanks to Google and Overture promoting contextually matched ads as somehow being just like search ads, many advertisers expected similar results -- which they're not getting at all. So, now, some advertisers seem to be fighting back and are telling Google and Overture that it's about time they separated out the two forms of advertising and let the advertisers work each campaign separately. It appears that Overture has started to move in this direction, but Google continues to insist that there's no reason to treat the ads differently.

EyeTV maker Elgato Systems on Friday introduced two new Mac OS X-based digital video recorders (DVRs) mainly aimed at the European market -- the EyeTV 300 and 400. Elgato's original EyeTV transfers analog video to the Macintosh's hard drive through USB. These new EyeTV devices instead use FireWire, and support a European digital television standard called Digital Video Broadcast, or DVB. DVB is available in the UK, as well as parts of Spain, Sweden, Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal and Australia.

Roaming Poised to Expand

Roaming Poised to Expand 11/06/2003 12:46 AM
The Wall Street Journal says T-Mobile near signing a roaming agreement (link good for 7 days): The article reports that roaming is starting to become an inevitability. I'm curious whether T-Mobile envisions a model in which there is fee settlement across networks, or it's free roaming. The TeliaSonera model cited in the article involves one bill, one account, but usage fees outside of the home network range of Finland and Sweden and certain TeliaSonera-operated hotspots in other Scandinavian countries. I stand by my prediction: within a year, all U.S. networks will have substantial inter-network roaming agreements that will allow unlimited usage by subscribers for $30 per month or less. The marginal but vital additional value of Wi-Fi will enhance cellular and landline businesses, and possibly that of wired ISPs, but it won't have the standalone value that some misguided souls believe it does today....

A new study published in the journal Science looked at footnotes from scientific articles in three major journals (the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, and Nature) at 3 months, 15 months and 27 months after publication, and found that the prevalence of inactive Internet references grew during those intervals from 3.8% to 10% to 13%. In another recent study, one-fifth of the Internet addresses used in a Web-based high school science curriculum disappeared over 12 months, and a third study found that 40% to 50% of the URLs referenced in articles in two computing journals were inaccessible within four years. Brewster Kahle, widely admired for his creation of the Internet Archive project, says: "It's a huge problem. The average lifespan of a Web page today is 100 days. This is no way to run a culture."

Culture in a Perl 08/11/2002 12:20 PM
Before I got completely caught up in the Perl culture, I was happy to do my own thing and not care what people thought of me. It was an enjoyable time. I could do what I wanted and say what I wanted. But as I got more and more involved, I realised that I was doing more things just to get people's attentions and say "Look at Simon! Isn't he doing clever stuff?". I felt less able to do things just for fun, or just for me, and I felt completely unable to express any sort of dissatisfaction with the way things were going in the Perl world. That would make me an outcast, and I didn't want to be an outcast. Got to fall into line. Don't criticise the popular people, or you'll be unpopular.
