What I Like About Windows: USB Disk

What I Like About Windows: USB Disk

What I Like About Windows: USB Disk 04/27/2004 09:39 PM

This is how I remove my USB disk from my Mac OS X machine without any loss of data:
1. Mental check that I am no longer using the USB disk.
2. Open Finder window.
3. Click on the eject button next to the USB disk icon.
4. Wait for the disk to be unmounted.
5. Remove the physical disk.
This is how I remove my USB disk from my Windows machine without any loss of data:
1. Mental check that I am no longer using the USB disk.
2.. Remove the physical disk.
Perhaps it's all those defensive programming (ha!) based on years of training from the fact that users can remove floppy disks on Windows anytime they like... (No need to drag icon to trash can.)

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

Floppy Disk Size

Floppy Disk Size 05/13/2004 04:57 PM

Floppy disk: From Wikipedia we get the reason 5 1/4" floppy disks were that size.

After meeting in a bar in Boston, Adkisson asked Wang what size he thought the disks should be, and Wang pointed to a napkin and said "about that size". Adkisson took the napkin back to California, found it to be 5¼ inches wide (13 cm), and developed a new drive of this size storing 110 KB.

A great and informative article all-around.

Lacie-Bigger-Disk-Extreme_3.jpg imageWhen you're giving the pros and cons of a 1.6TB (terabyte) hard disk array, like the LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme, and the only con is "bulky," then you're probably doing pretty good by my estimation. As a follow up to previous Bigger Disk external storage drives, there's no question the 1.6TB version is impressive, smashing together four 400GB drives into a single array that requires no special drivers to be used in Windows XP or Mac OSX. And it looks sufficiently swanky, too, if aluminum doesn't grate on you.

LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme 2TB 04/06/2005 09:10 AM

lacie_biggerdiskextreme.jpgLaCie has a new network storage device called the Bigger Disk Extreme, with up to 2 terabytes of storage. The Firewire and USB 2.0 drives can even be daisy-chained to allow for RAID, either via striping or mirroring. A ton of storage and for not much money, at just $2,300.

That naming scheme seems like a dead end, though. You can't get more extreme than 'extreme.'

Boot disk saves the day

Boot disk saves the day 01/22/2004 06:54 AM
Back in the day, before interconnected networks, I always carried two or three NetWare client boot diskettes with me when visiting remote sites. Two or three were needed because invariably someone would fold, spindle or mutilate at least one leaving me hours from my own desk and no way to create another. This was also, I might add, before the days of laptops - or even "portables," that euphemistic word for the 40-pound computer you lugged around in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
